A tragic hero is defined as a hero who makes a judgement error and it inevitably leads to his or her death as defined by aristotle. Aristotle is one of the most famous philosophers of ancient Greece. He had guidelines for the best tragedies and what has to be involved in the characteristics of a tragic hero. There were five non-negotiable traits that to be in a part of the tragic hero. 1.)They had to either be of noble or royal birth or had to have wisdom. 2.)They had to have hamartia which is a tragic or fatal flaw. Most tragic heroes died, few rarely survived. 3.)They must have a reversal of fortune brought about the heroes main error which causes them to die. 4.) He is respected and the poster child pretty much of the Roman army. Throughout the movie he to go through hardships.He wasn’t allowed to go home to Spain, his men forcibly turned on him, and his son and wife were killed very brutally. In my mind Maximus is a tragic hero. He may not be a complete tragic hero by Aristotle’s standards but he is a tragic hero no less. He exudes all the qualities of a tragic hero.
Maximus has a lot of the character traits of a tragic hero. He has suffered quite a bit, he was taken from Spain’s army to be in the Roman army where he became a general and he wasn’t allowed to go home to see his wife and child and tend to his farm. After that his men take him and try to execute him.After he escapes he has to fight for his life in battles as a gladiator until he is stabbed by commodus as a way of upping his advantage. He is well liked by his fellow soldiers. Marcus Oreilius, which was the caesar at the time wishes that Maximus was his son. The only person who disliked Maximus was Commodus and that was because Maximus was everything Commodus wasn’t. Maximus was powerful, brave, and worst of all Commodus’s father’s favorite. His tragic flaw would be that he is too merciful. He is a very talented soldier and easily could’ve killed commodus and all this would’ve been avoided. He starts off as stated by someone in the movie as “one of Rome’s greatest generals” and in the end he is chained with Commodus saying a whole monologue at him and then stabs him to where he has to fight while wounded and because of the wound he collapses and dies. He has no real anagnorisis about what happens to him. His fate was that his wife and child died and he was killed in a dirty battle. I believe that he got a fate greater than he deserved because he was kept from his family and had to stay in battle and was a slave to fight as a gladiator. In the end he was the savior of Rome and he was reunited with his wife and child in the elysian fields once he died.
