Recommended: Relations between the Soviet Union and the United States during the Cold War

Since the end of the cold war, tensions between the United States and Russian have increased. Although no fighting had occurred between the two countries during the cold war, nuclear missile threats had caused a lot of fear to the citizens. As Boris Yeltsin came into power, tensions started to decrease because of his beliefs of democracy; but as Vladimir Putin came into power in 2000, tensions increased causing panic about another possible world war; most likely containing nuclear weapons.
Born in a small village of Russia, Boris Yeltsin became the first president of Russia to be elected by popular vote. Although he was elected as a Democrat, he initially joined the Communist Party before later leaving them to join the Democratic Party. In august of 1991, when a coup of conservative communists tried to takeout Gorbachev, Yeltsin led an opposition to the coup, even though he had different beliefs than Gorbachev.
