Edgar Allan Poe was a smart, self-taught man. He got little support from his uncaring father, and didn’t have female support due to his mother, sister, and wife dying from tuberculosis. Poe’s stories are similar by having dark characteristics, which represent his life
The four stories are “The Masque of the Red Death”, “The Fall of the House of Usher”, “The Cask of Amontillado”, and “Alone”. All four of Poe’s works have a mysterious, dauntless, alarming, fearful, and depressed setting. “The Fall of the House of Usher” shows both fear and mysterious settings. “During a dull, dark, and soundless day in the Autumn of the year….” A dark and soundless day would describe a world with no sunshine and no light that Poe would see as an end to his world. “The Cask of Amontillado” also has a fearful setting. “He had a weak point – this Fortunado – although in other regards he was a man to be respected and even feared.” Montresor is taking the advantage of Fortunado’s drinking problem to lead Fortunado into his own death. “Alone” has a depressed setting, the narrator had a difficult childhood
