The main aspect that drew me to attend Maryville University is that it offered online courses and the enrollment advisor. Online classes allow the flexibility for me to complete course work and assignments around my family, work life and community events. Some of the roles I have are: being a mother of 6 children, attending all their activities, director of nursing for an assistive living facility, girl scout troop leader and church women board. The enrollment advisor played a huge part in choosing the program. After a brief discussion about the Family Nurse Practitioner program I wasn’t just another student they were trying to get signed up for classes but the enrollment advisor invested time in me. Montclair State University is lead by a bard of trustees, offices of the university, including the president and academic Dean (Montclair State University, 2017) . The current present is Susan A Cole, she is the 8th president, and has been in this position since 1998 (Montclair State University, 2017).
Marc (pseudonym), the student that is attending the community college grew up near the area of the school. Marc is currently attending American River College and is currently in his second year. Overall he has completed three semesters of general education. This is third semester which also includes him taking courses that entails his major preparation courses. He is participating in Puente and TRIO Journey as well as TRIO STEM which is for first generation students that helps students identify the gap in education that they did not receive in high school or at home. He is currently decided on Electrical Engineering as his major. I have the opportunity to see Marc in two different spaces, one in the HUB, the center of students services on campus. The other is having the ability to see him in the Human Career Development course as part of being part the TRIO Journey program. In this class, I can also further assess his characteristics as an individual and in a collectivistic environment. The key presenting issue with Marc is that he is a community college student that is stuck, regarding his decision towards his transfer, major and location of schools.
While I wish finding my way around the school was my only problem, I was faced with some internal challenges. As the school year started, my friends slowly started to leave to these “big shot” colleges or simply move away to other community colleges. I, too, wanted the complete “college experience” somewhere in Arizona or across the country; yet I felt stuck and unaccomplished. I also felt jealousy which could have been because I did not get to decorate my dorm room.While talking about dedicating hard work to your education, Gina Rodriguez said “Just remember, during those times of fear and doubt, that you are right now discovering your true strength.” And in those times of doubt, I reminded myself why I could not just move and leave everything behind. The root of my challenges and concerns are my family. As I enrolled as a full time student, my family was fighting some financial problems which created marriage troubles for my parents. I could not leave at a time like this. I knew it was not the first time my parents were talking divorce but somehow I knew it was best to stay. I got financial aid from the school which saved me the fuss of asking my parents for money. It really meant so much to not put another worry on their
The primary reason I am applying to Molloy College is my desire to earn the education and qualifications in order to provide more involved care for my patients at work. I have known for some time that I have always wanted to be a nurse. Therefore, in April 2007 I enrolled in a program to become a certified nurse’s aide and earned my New York state certification in July 2007. I began working immediately at a skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility in November 2007; I also began working in a hospital starting April 2015. Being employed at both facilities is what led me to fall in love with a career in nursing, all while allowing me to gain a wonderful amount of experience caring for a diverse population as well as working with a diverse population of health care professionals.
One day I hope to become a Nurse Practitioner giving compassionate and adequate care to those individuals who are less fortunate and are in need of care. The first semester of college I took a sociology class and I realized the social aspect of that major also interested me greatly if not more. After taking a psychology careers class I realized that they didn’t really have the sort of work I want to go into. Which pushed me into doing research my first year of college on careers, I realized the goal should be to work toward a social work degree. However, McKendree University doesn’t have a strong social work program and that is why I decided I would have a better chance if I transferred to a different
My immediate goals after completing this program is to take some time off from school, pay off our (additional) student loans, and when the time is right possibly evaluate the feasibility of pursuing my Bachelor Degree in Healthcare Administration or continue on in trying to obtain my Master 's Degree in Nursing. However, I currently foresee immediate challenges to those plans - my eldest child, my son, is currently a junior in high school, aspiring to become a Pharmacist and attend UH Hilo. In addition, my daughter, who is three years younger to my son, is aspiring to become an Ophthalmologist. So as with any parents, I may put my goal aside to help both my children achieve their goals.
My college career started with me just going to school to take PE classes while neglecting my main required core classes and always pushing them aside without any urgency to succeed in finishing school. A couple of years would go by with little to no progress and lack of motivation to succeed in finishing my college required classes. Soon landing a career oriented job and finding myself dropping out of college to focus on my work career. From this point and time I would learn the importance of school and the value of finish college through my years of experience at work. This awareness of value in finishing college would motivate me to want to go back to school. Soon I would find myself at American River College counseling center. Here I was coming back to school unsure of myself and in an environment where I previously never found success in school. After meeting with my counselor I was recommended to take a college success course. This course is part of a program called the Accelerated College Education (ACE). Because I was able to learn along the years being out of school the importance of gaining an education I gained a new motivation for school, signed up for this ACE program, and enroll in the college success
Reflecting back, this program has enriched my professional career, knowledge, and perspective of nursing in various ways. I believe I have developed advanced critical thinking and analytical skills, high EI based on learned knowledge, flexibility to accept change, and rational reasoning/knowledge to understand EBP and nursing research. The program offered me more than I had expected, in terms of knowledge, evaluation, analysis, synthesis, competency, and creativity. Each course and its innovative learning style (e.g., voice thread, youseeu, journal club, etc.) challenged, empowered, and motivated me to perform better, aim higher, and excel. During my freshman year, I did have a few financial setbacks and wasn’t able to attend full-time the whole year. Eventually, I transferred to Northeastern University and majored in Health Sciences. I was very impressed with the courses offered for the Health Science majors. I was able to take a variety of courses related to health care. One of my favorite classes was Bioethics because I was really interested in learning how ethics and morals played a part into medicine. During my undergraduate career at Northeastern University , I did have to take time off, a couple of times because of financial reasons. While I was at Northeastern University I was working mostly full-time and trying to balance a full-time course load. I was not in a position where I could not work and just focus on school only. By that time, I was married with a two-year-old, so I did the only thing I knew how to do and I pushed off college again. Fast-forward five additional years and I was seriously looking to enroll in college this time, but now there were three kids and I quit my job (daycare was not a feasible option with three kids) to be a stay at home parent. By not bringing in any sort of income, college still wasn’t going to be an available option anytime soon. Once my youngest was three I decided to start looking at college once again. I knew it would need to be online since my family’s schedule does not allow for anything else. Excited doesn’t even begin to describe how I felt knowing I would finally be able to start college. However, my excitement quickly turned to disappointment when I learned in order for me to be accepted I needed to have at least 12 credit hours already under my belt.
