Road to Recovery Mary Johnson had a dark past. Mary was in an abusive relationship for years with a man she thought loved her. One day, she managed to muster up the strength to leave him and has since been determined to make a better life. Motivated to use the pain she had endured to help others; therefore, Mary became a counselor. She felt that this career decision would give her the opportunity to help others battling with abusive relationships,and gain the strength to leave and build happier futures. Mary realized that she must face her past and fight the demons of regret, depression, post traumatic stress disorder, and substance abuse before she would be able to help others. To begin with, Mary was in a relationship with her boyfriend for three years. He was emotionally and physically abusive towards her for the better part of their relationship. When Mary finally left him, her life was not immediately perfect. She suffered from depression because she believed she had deserved the abuse and that her boyfriend …show more content…

PTSD is most common among soldiers after they have been to war, but anyone can have PTSD after a traumatic experience. Mary suffered from flashbacks, anxiety attacks, and occasional hostility. She came reliant on sleeping with all the lights on within her home because she thought it might help her. She had a severe anxiety disorder that required her to take daily medication ;designed to alleviate her symptoms and make it easier to cope. Mary did not trust anyone for a long while. She eventually learned that confiding in others made dealing with her issues easier..Mary had a hard time with her PTSD, but she learned to manage and deal with it through counseling and her family.
