We currently live in a digital age world. A world where technology is the forefront of how we function in society. One technological factor that is well utilized in many places primarily the U.S is the smartphone. This is a device that is portable meaning it can fit right in your pockets. Although as diminutive as it may seem, this device is immensely powerful in many aspects regarding human use. We use this for communication, entertainment, jobs/careers and various other methods. It’s keen to say that this device does a lot for our civilization in productivity and efficiency. One of the reasons this article stood out to me was because of how significant it was. Significant in the sense of addressing the detrimental risks of smartphones. In this source, the data presented was done so in a statistical way that other sources I came across did not. For instance, various charts were displayed for providing extra information. The main claim that was focused in this source was smartphone use in regards to driving. Bowerman expresses how many people primarily teens go through accidents and potential death from using their smartphones while driving. As well as, the concept of oblivion is addressed. One example from the source states, “A majority of Americans agree that texting while driving is dangerous, but in a culture with more screen time than face time, keeping phones out of sight in the car is easier said than done” (Bowerman). This example does a fine job of contributing well to my issue question. The fact that people find it to be a struggle to let go of something that is essential life threatening, ignites the idea of it taking over their lives. And to go even deeper, the portion “Texting while driving kills” in the title, correlates to my question because, with this source, smartphones are taking over people’s lives but in a literal …show more content…

I was attracted to this source simply because it answers my issue question in a way. This source provides reasoning for what can make smartphones take over our lives. So, I felt it was essential to bring up a source that can again provide those answers to my main question. I also liked the organization this source had. For it to be structured in three strong sections made it very easy to pinpoint the main idea. Now Hamman’s position in this source was on three main elements of utilization for smartphones. The ideas of smartphones being a sidekick, a communication and productive tool were all addressed. One quote from the source states, “When we hold our phones, it reminds us of moments of intimacy” (Hamman). Here the notion of smartphones being that social tool is expressed. Hamman believes that people these devices provide that factor to us. The fact that smartphones are extremely efficient in communicating with others, would aid people to resort to using it constantly. This would relate to the issue question due to it showcasing a cause on how smartphones could take over our lives but in this case metaphorically. With people continuously chatting and socializing digitally would contribute to if smartphones are indeed taking over our lives.
