Did you know before Marlene Dietrich became an actress, she originally studied music to become a singer? Born as Maria Magdalene Dietrich on December 27, 1901, in Berlin, Germany she has starred in over 50 films. Being most well-known for The Blue Angel and Shanghai Express, her sexy and sensual appeal led her to become a major leading lady from the 1930’s till the late 1940’s. It wasn’t originally going to be like this, actually. In her late teens, before she became an actress, she originally wanted to be a singer! Even though her parents disapproved of this, it didn’t stop her from attending Max Reinhardt’s drama school to pursue her newly-found career. She became an official U.S. citizen in 1939 because of her life back in Germany. She strongly opposed the Nazi government and had been asked, by affiliates of Hitler, to come back (to Germany) to star in more films, but she declined. This led to her films being banned in Germany, her home country. Though, during World War II, Marlene traveled generously to entertain allied troops with performances (songs) such as “Lili Marlene” and others. She also recorded anti-Nazi messages in her native tongue (German) for broadcast and worked on war-bond drives. Following World War II, Marlene starred in several more successful films like Witness for the Prosecution and A Foreign Affair, both directed by Billy Wilder. Her acting career started to dissipate so she turned to her original dream: singing! It flourished in the mid-1950’s and she performed worldwide, much to her fans elation. Marlene also published her autobiography, Dietrich’s ABC in 1960. By mid-1970’s, she gave up performing altogether and moved to Paris where she spent most of the rest of her life
