Marijuana Over coming on Jamaica When you hear the word Jamaica, what is the first thing that comes to mind? Many say vacation, get-away island, and summertime, but overall, everyone thinks Jamaica is all about marijuana. Jamaica’s traditional use of cannabis dates back nearly 150 years ago. Marijuana is a common street and recreational drug that comes from the marijuana plant: the hemp plant cannabis sativa. The pharmacologically active ingredient in marijuana is tetra-hydro-cannabinol. Marijuana is used to heighten perception, effect mode, and increase relaxation. It is illegal and pervasive but it has been prohibited for a century. One of their most famous “rules” was smoking the holy herb. To Rastafarians, Ganja is not only a simple mind-altering substance, it is the holy herb mentioned in the bible.
