Marge Piercy Barbie Doll Analysis

Barbie Dolls have been around since 1959 and what just seemed to be a harmless doll for young girls to play with, turned to a doll that would make every little girl worry about their insecurities. The Barbie doll was made to be the perfect example of what a girl is supposed to be. There has been a lot of controversy surround Barbie dolls because of the effects that it can have on little girls growing up. All girls that grew up playing with Barbies always expected that one day they grow up to be like Barbie. To much of their surprise they never grew up to be like Barbie because no one could ever been as perfect as Barbie. Another major problem with Barbie was that she was that Barbie only came in one color. Barbies were caucasian with blonde hair and blue eyes. For all the girls that did not have all of that it brought many insecurities growing up. The authors does not like to state the obvious in her writings. She like to leave clues and have the reader come to a conclusion all on their own. She writes short lines that are to the point, she also does not bother to have an end rhyme in any of her lines. On the other hand Piercy likes to use alliteration in her poem to make up for her lack of end rhyme in the rest of the poem. With such a dark topic the author does a good job of keeping the poem light which such a heavy topic. This topic is a big problem today for girls growing up everywhere and if not dealt in the right way it it could really drag down and give the story a very dark tone. Piercy manage to keep the poem upbeat with short lines and a playful use of alliteration.
