1b. STRUCTURAL FRAME - The painting of Margaret Olley, painted by William Dobell won the Archibald Prize in 1948. This painting is now at the art gallery of NSW. The main colours that have been used in the William Dobell painting are a pearly white colour for Margaret Olleys dress. William Dobell has also used a lot of gold and brown in the background which I think makes the painting look royal. William Dobell has painted the background in dark colours and then uses lighter colours on Margaret Olley to soften and also to accentuate the figure of Margaret. In her article, “Lecture Me. Really”, Molly Worthen addresses the issue college students know all too well: how to lecture properly. Published in the New York Times, Worthen writes a passionate article about lecturing but from the perspective of a professor. Worthen presents the idea that lecturing, although some may think ineffective in the classroom, is a way to truly challenge and engage students into critically thinking. Worth dictates this idea with an excellent build up logical argument but lacks the proper evidence to support her claims creating a faulty argument.
The plaque shown is a light umber in color, with a funeral scene etched out in black and white engravings into the smooth surface. The figures are very geometric in style and simplified. Even so, each figure seems to still have somewhat differentiating features from one another. How they are places in relation to each other creates a sense of rhythm within the piece. Helping guide the viewer, and lends itself to the illusion of the element of time.
Anne Lamott has an amazing ability to connect with the audience. With use of personal experience and scenarios to be able to connect with the reader using rhetorical techniques such as ethos and pathos. Although her use of vulgar terms may tend to turn off readers, giving her points less impact.
The article “Leaving Omelas: Questions of Faith and Understanding,” by Jerre Collins, draws attention to the fact that the short story “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas,” by Ursula Le Guin, has not impacted Western thought despite its literary merit. Collins breaks his article down into three parts, the first explaining that he will “take this story as seriously as we are meant to take it” (525). Collins then goes over several highly descriptive sections of the story, which invite the reader to become part of the utopia that is Omelas. Collins states that when it comes to the state of the child and how it affects the citizens of Omelas the descriptions “may seem to be excessive and facetious” (527). It is hard to believe that a single photographer captured this image. The photographer who captured this incredible picture goes by the name of Margaret Bourke-White. According to the caption, this image was taken around 1937 and it depicts 16 African Americans including one white girl that are standing in a line, carrying various personal belongings as if they were leaving to go away somewhere. Each of these individuals standing in line has nice cold weather clothing on and each of them have looks of indifference. You can easily see that these people are not happy at all. These people are the main focus in the image; they are standing in line in every ounce of hope whether it be retrieving clothing or food. The most striking feature of this photo is that they are standing in front of an “American Dream” billboard. The billboard displays a wealthy Caucasian family riding in a car and they each have a look of joy and happiness. It is known that many important and influential people held slaves during the time in which our country allowed to do so. It’s less known, or strategically forgotten in our history that it was incredibly common for slave owners to have sexual relationships with their slaves, consensual or otherwise. Reading through the very beginning of Susan Griffin’s “Our Secret” felt like reading Shakespeare for the first time as a sticky fingered, toothless, second grader. It just did not make sense...my mind couldn’t quite comprehend it yet. Nothing in the essay seemed to be going in any clear direction, and the different themes in each of the paragraphs did not make sense to me. There was no flow – as soon as you began to comprehend and get used to one subject, she would switch it up on you and start talking about something else that seemed unrelated. ‘Ochres’ performed by Bangarra Dance Theatre is a work choreographed by Stephen Page. ‘Ochres’ is performed in four sections, Yellow, Black, White and Red. Each section represents a different aspect of the aboriginal culture and its meaning. ‘Red’ demonstrates the youth, the obsession, the poison and the pain involved with the customs, laws and values associated with the relationship of men and women. Tannen breaks these down into seven different categories; apologies, criticism, thank-yous, fighting, praise, complaints, and jokes. With each of these she compares men to women by explaining the common misconceptions that each of the genders do. The different style of communication can cause some problems at the workplace and even affect the environment. Edgar Allan Poe’s 1849 poem, “Annabel Lee”, explores the common themes of romance and death found in many of Poe’s works. The poem tells the story of a beautiful young maiden named Annabel Lee who resides by the sea. The maiden and the narrator of the poem are deeply in love, however the maiden falls ill and dies, leaving the narrator without his beloved Annabel Lee. Contrary to what many might expect from a poem by Poe and yet still depressing, the poem ends with the narrator accepting Annabel’s death and remains confident that they will forever be together despite her parting.
