Can producing notorious works of art make you an art superstar? Is blood and DNA appropriate forms of a medium in Art? Marc Quinn’s sculptures are a relational exploration between art and science, using a plethora of mediums from the human body as a canvas and reference. Marc Quinn ideology framework is the use of materials has an ability to communicate his visions, opens a dialog between himself the artist and the viewer. His work bridges his thought process through art. Marc Quinn believes using the influence of his materials, not just appall viewers, but also to transmit a different vision more directly. Marc Quinn was born in 1964 in London, to a French mother and a British father, where he currently lives and works. Quinn studied the history of Art at Cambridge University. Prior to acceptance Cambridge, Quinn never had any formal art training or experience. Before learning how to cast in bronze in 1983, he studied under the tutelage and experience of sculptor Barry Flannigan. Some of his more notable exhibitions were Victoria and Albert Museum, London (2001), 50th Venice Biennale (2003) and solo’s like Fondazione Prada, Milan (2000), Tate Liverpool 2002 DHC/ART Foundation and Fondation Beyeler, Basel (2009). Quinn’s work is focused on the body; science and nature and prefers using materials for its natural and figurative content. Quinn’s concepts are thought provoking, using innovative materials and mediums, of blood, ice, glass, DNA, and scientific experiment challenges the boundaries between what is art and science.
