Title: Managing ethical behaviour in construction organizations, integrating ethics into construction, professional ambivalence towards ethics in the construction industry

Introduction

Managers want to understand why employees behave ethically or unethically in the organization and what influences this behaviour. Ethics is necessary because by it people are able to position themselves. Effective management of ethical behaviour requires organizations ensuring both their managers and employees know how to deal with ethical issues. The construction industry is plagued with a number of problems. One of these pressing problems is the unethical behaviour of professionals in construction industry, which affects long-term business dealings, and influence quality, time and costs.

There is a lack of awareness in construction education regarding how to integrate ethical behaviour into professional practice. Several challenges facing construction are how to develop strategies that will raise awareness regarding ethical issues related to construction and how to provide a framework to make ethical decisions.

Following the growing consensus within and outside the construction industry that corruption and other unethical practices are endemic in the industry, coupled with scarce empirical study on professional ethics in the industry. Ethical behaviour in the construction industry is a subject which rarely discussed openly (Miller, 2011). Construction projects have suffered from under-achievement in the recent past, because professionals’ misconduct has been on the increase.
