It’s a Saturday evening and I am sitting on the benches at the mall. As I am sitting here I am taking in what I see, hear, and even smell. I see a diverse group of people walking all around the mall. Echoes of people’s conversations linger in the back of my ears. Finally, the aroma of food fills my nostrils. To begin, the Mall is a very popular place, and is mostly busy on the weekends. I decided to sit and observe on a Saturday because I knew that most activity would take place during this time. While I was observing the first thing I noticed was how many different types of people were there. From first glance I could see that there were White people, Black people, Mexicans, and Asians. This theory was developed by Geert Hofstede and is broken up into six dimensions (Power Distance Index, Individualism Vs. Collectivism, Uncertainty Avoidance Index, Masculinity vs. Feminity, Long- term orientation Vs. Short-term orientation, Indulgence Vs, Restraint) This thoery was designed to descirbe the effects of a societies cultures based on its members and behavior. The dimesnsion that I applied to my observation was the Masculinity Vs. Feminity and Individualism Vs. Collectivism. Masculinity Vs. Feminity can be applied to my observation because while at the mall I saw couples were holding hands and it was clear that you could tell the male was more dominant. When a couple was walking and wanted to stop in a store the guy would stop and walk in, almost like he was in control of where they would be going. In families who had a mom and dad you could tell that the male was leader of the group by the way he carried himself. Also, Individualism Vs. Collectivism was demonstrated during my observation. Overall, America is an Individualism culture, which means that we are all entiled into making our own decisions and thinking for ourselves.
