Male dominance is something that is showed in both stories “The Yellow Wallpaper” and “A Rose for Emily”. Both the women in these stories feel they can’t be complete without a dominant male role in their life or that it was forced upon them. However, they both find a way out of this over powering rule through insanity, as some people see it. In the time the stories were based and written, women were not supposed to be sophisticated or intelligent, and were over taken by their emotions. The men believed all that women were good for was housekeeping and taking care of children. In “the Yellow Wallpaper” the narrator is over ruled by her physician of a husband who believes that isolation is the best cure for her post pardon depression. While in “a Rose for Emily” Emily’s father was her main influence in life and when he died she went into denial and didn’t know what to do with her life. Both the women struggle with how to gain their independence back, but find their freedom through a way of insanity. In “The Yellow Wallpaper” the narrator describes things in the room, which in way, is a symbol of male dominance in the story. The main symbolism in the story is the wallpaper. For example the horrid yellow that is on the walls represents her “illness” or depression issues diagnosed by her husband. However, the vulgar yellow wallpaper pattern shows the restrictions the narrator believed she was enforced too. During her time in the room the narrator creates an imaginative woman inside the wallpaper representing her and other women in society who are also trapped by the male-centric society. The main character Emily in A Rose for Emily is always the main topic in conversations between the women in the story. The women believe it to be odd that she isn’t married for her age, When she does find someone to be with the women judge her because of rumors that her partner is a homosexual. In The Yellow Wallpaper, the narrator weaves a tale of a woman with deep seeded feelings of depression. Her husband, a physician, takes her to a house for a span of three months where he puts her in a room to recuperate. That “recuperation” becomes her nemesis. She is so fixated on the “yellow wallpaper” that it seems to serve as the definition of her bondage. She gradually over time begins to realize what the wallpaper seems to represents and goes about plotting ways to overcome it. In a discussion concerning the wallpaper she states, “If only that top pattern could be gotten off from the under one! I mean to try it, little by little.” “There are only two more days to get this paper off, and I believe John is beginning to notice. I don’t like the look in his eyes.”
As the narrator’s mental state changes so does the way she perceives things around the house. The most prominent example of this is the imagery of the wallpaper and the way the narrator’s opinion on the wallpaper slowly changes throughout the story; this directly reflects what is happening within the narrator’s mind. At the beginning of the story the narrator describes the wallpaper as “Repellent...revolting... a smoldering unclean yellow” (Gilman 377). As the story continues the narrator starts to become obsessed with the wallpaper and her opinion of it has completely changed than that of hers from the beginning. The Yellow Wallpaper was written as a realism story. It showed how woman felt they had the same opportunities as men in their personal choices. In this story, the woman expressed her worries to her husband who through good intentions, required that his wife stay in bed 24/7, and not do any of the things she would normally do. In effect his wife became worse until she reached the limit. The behavior of the husband at this time was completely normal. Men were the higher power over women and women, like the one in this story, felt that they couldn?t stand count for themselves.

While John represented characteristics of a typical male of his time, the yellow wallpaper represented a controlling patriarchal society; a sin of inequality that a righteous traitor needed to challenge and win. As the wallpaper deteriorates, so does the suppressing effect that male hierarchy imposed on women. Male belief in their own hierarchy was not deteriorating. Females began to think out of line, be aware of their suppression, and fight patriarchal rule. The progression of the yellow wallpaper and the narrator, through out the story, leads to a small win over John. This clearly represents and motivates the first steps of a feminist movement into the twentieth century.
