For many years, people from all over the world have come to the United States seeking a better life for themselves, their spouse, their children and even their children's children. However, not every immigrant comes into this country legally and many of these illegal immigrants are poor, uneducated and may be carrying contagious diseases. Jose Antonio Vargas was sent away from the Philippines by his mother hoping that he would be able to achieve a better life, and be happy. In “Outlaw: My Life in America as an Undocumented Immigrant” Vargas is able to find his better life and happiness in America but also fear and anxiety. Vargas gives us a look into the life of an illegal immigrant the good, the bad, their achievements and their constant struggles. Very much like Vargas my father immigrated to America, but legally in 1986.
Alexis de Tocqueville and Langston Hughes both have their own ideas about what America is, was, and should be. Alexis de Tocqueville’s Democracy in America praises American democracy in which everyone is included. This inclusion allows for democracy that everyone can be a part of and feel like they are contributing. On the contrary, Langston Hughes’s “Let America Be America Again” depicts an excluding America that does not treat everyone equivalently. Hughes portrays America as a misrepresentation that does not uphold the ideals that it is so famous for. The two works contrast in many ways but do have some similarities. Although their ideas are different, politics is still a choice. Tocqueville describes politics as a choice that everyone should make as it benefits them all while Hughes describes politics as a choice that some do not have the power to take part in. I believe the three most important issues today preventing us in the US from being a just country are our welfare/healthcare system, our homelessness epidemic, and illegal immigration. Many in poverty in the US can not afford health care, or good health care. Efforts have been made by Obama to aid this but the fact remains that you need money for quality health care, and a lot of it. Just because someone gets hurt or sick should not mean they need to go into debt to get better. The issue of Homelessness in the US could be ended for about 20billion dollars according to a 2012 article in the Huffington post, that 's slightly LESS than what we spend on Christmas decorations every year. To me the fact that we allow people to live in the streets is unacceptable and sickening. The problem could be fixed easily if citizens truly wanted to fix it, but not many see the need. Illegal immigration in the US continues to grow and grow with about 6.5 million undocumented Hispanics in the US, or about 65% of the total number of undocumented immigrants in the US. The issue with illegal immigrants is that we have no way of knowing what they are coming here for, bringing or taking with them, and it is not fair to those who decide to go through the legal way. The legal way can take a great deal of time and a lot of work, and many times they are not even
God bless America. It’s a song, it’s an anthem, and it bears the hopes of many Christian Americans today. Like the man who built his house in the sand, we (Americans) have built our hope for salvation on a “in God we trust” government; and like the house in the sand, are learning that our foundation is not solid. Our faith in the sand is crumbling before us. So we sing “God bless America” a little louder. We raise our hands as we pray for God to bless our nation. We take His name in vain as we charge to take the freedom of others in the name of the freedom we have been “blessed” with. I must have missed the passage in the Bible that talks about America being God’s chosen nation.
