Magnus Chase and the Sword of Summer By Rick Riordan After the passing of his mother two years ago, 16-year-old Magnus Chase lives in poverty on streets of Boston. One day, he learns from his friend Blitz that two people are probing for him. He learns that the two people are his uncle and cousin, Frederick and Annabeth Chase, who were sent by moms older brother Randolph, to find him. Probing for clues, he breaks into his uncle's brick fronted mansion but is caught by Randolph. Randolph tells him that he is the son of a Norse god, and that his mother's death was not an accident. He brings Magnus to a bridge, where he is confronted by the fire giant, Surt. In the fight, Magnus is killed and carried to a modernized interpretation of the Norse afterlife, Hotel Valhalla by his valkyrie, Samirah "Sam" Al Abbas, a daughter of Loki. There, he learns that his father is the Norse god of fertility, Frey. After hearing a prophecy that Magnus is unworthy, Sam is removed from the Valkyries, as punishment for being the one who brought Magnus to the hotel. …show more content…

Joined by Sam, the four venture into the Nine Worlds, working to retrieve Sumarbrander, stop Ragnarok, and keep Fenris Wolf imprisoned. After multiple near-death experiences, meeting multiple gods, giants and monsters, and finding a stronger magic rope to re-imprison Fenris, the group manage to delay Ragnarok by stopping Fenris and expelling Surt back to Muspelheim. In the midst of the celebration a court singer begins to sing about the glory of the former Danish people many years ago. The song chronicles a battle between the Danes and the Frisians. The leader of the Frisians, Finn, engages in battle and ends up with most of his army being defeated. However, Finn ends up killing Hnaef the leader of the Danes. Hengest, successor to Hnaef, makes peace with Finn and the rest of the Danes end up living with the Frisian people. An important part of this episode to note is that the wife of Finn, Hildeburh, is also the sister of Hnaef. Hnaef and Hildeburh’s son were both killed in battle and their burial is described in grotesque detail. A member of the Frisian tribe gives a sword to Hengest who has long debated this newly forged allegiance with the Frisians. Hengest decides to take revenge and wages war once again. It’s unclear who exactly kills Finn, but he is murdered by a member of the Danish people. Hildeburh is taken captive and is brought back to her homeland with the Danes (lines 1065-1161). Thus ends the story that scholars refer to as the “Finn episode”.
