Throughout the stories of, “Beowulf”, “Sir Gawain and The Green Knight”, “Lanval” and “The Wife of Bath”, there is a sense of magic and some mystery in characters or actions in these stories. It can appear from magical armor, to a green giant that can still speak after his head has been cut off. In medieval times people who read these stories started to believe in more than just religion, but superstition, and the impossible too. (Venus, you need a stronger thesis. Yes, these things are true, but how does this make the concept of the role in magic more thrilling...or what is the purpose of the magical talisans?

1375-1400. This story includes many aspects of magic and mystery. Sir Gawain is a Knight from King Author’s court. While at a feast, a mysterious huge man wearing all green, including his skin and horse which were green also, challenged King Author. Sir Gawain steps in his place and accepts the challenge. The Green Knight purposed that he can have one blow, but the Green Knight would return the favor in the year to come. Gawain used his one blow, and chopped off The Green Knight’s head. To their surprise, The Green Knight picked up his head, and spoke. “For that scalp and skull now swung from his fist; to the noblest at the table he turned to face and it opened its eyelids, stared straight ahead and spoke this speech,-“(Sir Gawain and The Green Knight ln.444-447). He said Sir Gawain would have to come find him in a year, or be claimed a coward forever. Not only would Sir Gawain have to face a magical immortal man, but he would have to go on a mysterious journey to find him. On his trip Gawain is tiered and lost, but starts to see a shimmering castle that is hidden by magic. “He stopped and stared at one side of that stronghold as it sparkled and shone within shimmering oaks,-“(Sir Gawain and The Green Knight ln.771-772). He looks for refuge in this castle when he runs into the Queen of the castle, who is later revealed to be Morgana the witch, King Author’s sister. She used her magic to disguise herself. She gave him a magical belt that would protect him from harm. “For the body which is bound within this green belt, as long as it is buckled robustly about him, will be safe against anyone who seeks to strike him, and all the slyness on earth wouldn’t see him slain.”(Sir Gawain and The Green Knight ln. 1851-1854). When Sir Gawain finally found The Green Knight, the belt protected him from the killing blow.
