International Adoption Laws “Structural violence is defined as violence that occurs in the context of establishing, maintaining, extending, or reducing hierarchical relations between categories of people” (Iadicola). Structural violence can range from patriarchy to slavery to the adoption of children and more. This form of violence is usually manifested between different races and/or different genders. The violence that is occurring here is similar to the dominant forms of structural violence because Madonna is put at a disadvantage for adoption of children just because she is from America. She had to donate money to prove that she is committed to the country, and prove multiple times that she is worthy to be a mother to her children. This type violence is very subtle and typically not even seen as violence. The nonharmful violence against Madonna was very obvious, but the violence that is done to the children if they are not adopted from the orphanages is not so obvious. No one is directly being harmed or hurt through adoption or by adoption laws. However, if someone was denied the right to adopt from a third world country such as Africa, and the children start to die in the orphanages, then really harmful violence has occurred. It is not necessarily any one person’s fault that the children are suffering, and even when there is no one specific to blame, the violence is still occurring. International adoption is structural violence because if children from third world countries were not adopted, their life chances would suffer greatly. They would suffer in the orphanages from diseases, neglect, etc. The disadvantages that people have depending on their race or where they are from is a huge aspect of structural violence, and it is evident in the case of
