The Prince is a book that teaches how to become a better ruler. To become a ruler, one might take paths that are not the ideal ones; it might be for the benefit of the long run objectives. Machiavelli shows many ethical disputes one might encounter such as to be feared, to be unclear, and to be exterminator.
Sometimes, fear is better than to be loved. When Machiavelli makes reference to “it is better to be feared than to be loved,” I think he is referring to not be involved with bad individuals. It is better that others think one is scary for doing only the behaviors that are right such as studying than being adored for doing bad behaviors such as using drugs. Fear will keep away the bad influences and guide one in to the right path. In business, it is better to be seen as a right person that is not liked by many than being seen as a person of weak ethical values liked by many. In a working career, the first person will get far, and the other will be encounter by many difficult situations.
In many occasions, taking the correct ethical decision might not be as clear. In The Prince, there are many occasions in which the author states that it is good to keep ones word, but is better knowing how to lie. In chapter five of The prince, Machiavelli explains what should be done when conquered free states; one option is to destroy the state and start from the ground. In business, one organization must eliminate the previous values and put in place their own values. The old values might not be in accordance with the organizations goals. It also applies to oneself doing the right activities or anything one does in life. For example, if one has a drinking or smoking habit, it will be better if one completely eliminates a habit that is harming one’s body. This will lead to better body, a better thinking, and a better way to become a good ethical
