The over simplification of good and evil in our society is a dangerous path to walk on and no one know this better than Shakespeare. 400 years after his rule, popular stories are told with clear good and evil characters. Furthermore, where you will say the “hero” did nothing wrong even though they killed countless henchmen who were, perhaps evil. Probably didn’t hand back their library books. Bastards.
It’s not just movies however. This misleading concept underpins our justice system and has fuelled many wars. Some evil actions may even have good intentions or have been caused by environmental factors like social learning from family or peers.

Especially, since he wrote during the religious Elizabethan era. From the bible, he knew that killing was wrong, that stealing was wrong. But, this bard also knows that good and evil is just a matter of perspective.
Take Macbeth for example. This play challenges society’s idea of morality because it lacks the redemption of its two leads. The “hero” of the story, Macbeth, can be preserved in two ways. A power-hungry murderer who killed his way to power and was nuttier than a crap house rat. Or a weakened warrior who was exploited by corrupting forces.
This duality goes further. Take Macbeths ambition for example. Normally ambition is a good thing, it’s that drive to finally get higher than a C on that English assessment. But, for Macbeth. It’s what leads him to his demise. His final nail in the coffin.
Normally, stories have inhuman characters like Superman or Tony Stark. However, these characters often lack relatability. Although, Macbeth may be Shakespeare’s most relatable character because, he made an impossible, evil and unforgivable choice and suffered for it. A choice many of us, even I, may consider doing given the chance, especially in our money and power hungry
