Bryan Stevenson decided to write this article explaining why he chose to focus on lynchings for the memorial honoring black people who were killed. According to the article Bryan wants people to examine an era of American history that goes ignored. They called it ¨a chapter often left untold.¨ In the article, Bryan explains that he felt this was apart of our history that needed to be addressed.     In the months following the Brown v. Board of Education decision C. Vann Woodward wrote a series of lectures that would provide the basis for one of the most historically significant pieces of nonfiction literature written in the 20th century. Originally, Woodward’s lectures were directed to a local and predominantly southern audience, but as his lectures matured into a comprehensive text they gained national recognition. In 1955 Woodward published the first version of The Strange Career of Jim Crow, a novel that would spark a fluid historical dialogue that would continue for the next twenty years. Woodward foresaw this possibility as he included in the first edition, “Since I am…dealing with a period of the past that has not been adequately investigated, and also with events of the present that have come too rapidly and recently to have been properly digested and understood, it is rather inevitable that I shall make some mistakes. I shall expect and hope to be corrected.” Over this time period Woodward released four separate editions, in chapter form, that modified, corrected, and responded to contemporary criticisms.

    Victor Sejour’s short story “The Mulatto” from 1837 and Alice Walker’s story “The Child Who Favoured Daughter” from her collection In Love and Trouble: Stories of Black Women in 1973 are fine examples of African American gothic representing the complexity of racism within society and the theme of female sexuality. The stories have several themes in common that they address in their distinct manner. For instance, the representation of the slave community surrounding the main characters in “The Mulatto” is cooperated whereas, in “The Child Who Favoured Daughter,” the protagonist appears to have chosen to stay aloof from the society he belongs to. Another difference is in their respective narrative strategies; “The Mulatto” allegorizes the plot, lacking the gruesome narrative details of slave treatment, which lies in contrast with Walker’s story that offers an intensively detailed account. Further, “The Mulatto” deals with the macro issue of subjugation of mixed race slaves while “The Child Who Favoured Daughter” explicates the internal struggle of Africans in a free land. This racial struggle and their respective histories of violence result into the protagonists’ present state of ultimate madness making the two stories a gothic tragedy. Though the two stories belong to African American gothic genre, a common ground of representation is the similarity between the two texts of the mal-treatment of women, resulting from male desire that leads to their tragic demise. The dismal conditions that cripple women and issues surrounding it, like incestuous desires support the plot of the stories illustrating often-reversed assumptions of slavery.     Blacks were introduced to the North America during the 17th and 18th centuries through the triangular trade route, and were welcomed by chains, ropes, and all the horrors of slavery. Slavery was legalized by the US government and continued for a few hundred years, taking a civil war and sixteen presidents before it was forbidden. Even today, there is still much hatred between blacks and whites despite desegregation and integration; some would argue that the condition of African Americans in the United States is still one of a subservient nature. Federal law defines a hate crime as whenever a victim is attacked on the basis of his or her race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, or gender; hate offenses are made against members of a particular group simply because of their membership in that group (Levin 4). In 1998 an African-American was brutally murdered in Texas. There are over a hundred homicides committed every year, but the manner in which this life was taken and the apparent motive of his executers leaves no doubt that this crime was filled with hate. In this brutal murder, the motivation is obvious and clear, the explanation is so simple that it virtually hits you in the face. James Byrd Jr.'s death is America's shame: another man tortured for no reason- other than the color of his skin. I will use the Byrd murder to explore the cause and effects of hate crimes, and attempt to draw meaning from it so that a tragedy like this will not happen again.
