Love's Nature And Love: The Definition Of Love

At first, we will see the definition of love. As Plato says “one should first describe who love is and what his character is and describe its effects.” (201e96) We usually say god is love or love is god in our daily life and we will see how far our definition is right. According to Diotima Love is neither beautiful nor good. This is not to mean that love is ugly and bad but something in between. In our daily life’s we usually encounter people who are too beautiful and not so beautiful. But the people who are not beautiful does not necessarily have to be ugly and could be something in between as a bit attractive. So, we can say at the beginning that, Love is not beautiful neither ugly but somewhere in between. Metaphorically, Love is also not wise nor ignorant. A wise person does not desire to know more because he already have the wisdom, at the same time an ignorant person does not seek wisdom because he feels he has it even though he does not. And love is neither because love does not know everything nor is ignorant to pretend as if it knows everything. Love lies

For example, a person who have love of wisdom, philosopher is lover of wisdom and uses his love of curiosity to find new thouhts, connections or laws. So a lover always desires the possession of the good. “And what does he get when good things become his own?”. Once we have something good, all we want it is to have good things forever. And finally, a person due to the possession of things will be happy. We call happiness teleological, as it is the end complete in itself. It is chosen for the sake of itself.
