I have had a lot of interests and hobbies throughout my lifetime but no interest has stuck with me like my passion for hockey has. Hockey has transformed me into the person I am today and has shown me characteristics such as how to be successful, how to take responsibility for my mistakes, and always giving my best effort at anything I attempt. My love for hockey began when I was five years old when I would watch my hometown Blackhawks games with my dad. Watching the games turned me into a hockey fanatic. At the time the Blackhawks were going through a rough time as a franchise with attendance being low as well as not putting a favorable product on the ice. One occurrence was during a high school playoff game during my freshman year. My team was favored to win the championship but we had some difficulty. We were in a tied game against a team many expected us to beat and our opponent scored with fifty seconds left to pull ahead of us. Our coach called a timeout and rallied us together. Instead of yelling at us he told us “see you in overtime.” The next shift my line goes out and scores with fifteen seconds left to tie the game. Time expired and we head to overtime. After about five minutes of overtime Ipass to my winger and he scored off the pass to win the game. It was one of the most satisfying wins I have been apart of as we weren’t playing our best and how close we came to losing. That win fueled us the rest of the playoffs and we ended up winning the championship with that momentum. All in all hockey has had a major impact on my life. But, the most meaningful way I have connected myself to Russian culture is through ice hockey. I have played hockey throughout my entire life and many of my favorite players are Russian. I realized this connection when my teammates and I were watching the movie Miracle at a hockey tournament in Lake Placid, not in 1980 though. In the movie, it showed the Soviets having the best ice hockey program in the world at the time, while the young U.S. ice hockey program was developing. Throughout the entire movie, I was cheering for the Soviet Union because it was my homeland. But what I didn’t know at the time was that I was the only one in the room who had not seen the movie. During the first game that the U.S. played, the Soviets crucified the U.S. 10-3. … And then came the Olympics
Before the 1980 Winter Olympics began, the US Olympic hockey team was not expected to do as well as they did. They had many powerhouse teams to beat and the team was just a bunch of college kids who wanted to play hockey. In the end, they had performed one of the greatest upsets in the history of hockey by defeating the USSR, the whom many thought of as the greatest hockey team in the world.
Playing lacrosse in 6th grade made me want to play it now and in the future. Lacrosse in 6th grade made me like to run and love the sport everywhere I go. It made me want to play the sport now and in the future because it makes me think that I am being used in practices, games, and scrimmages. Lacrosse has helped me today by running faster in basketball, getting the ball lower in volleyball and getting the ball quicker in field hockey in gym class. Lacrosse has changed me as a person to work together on other sports on teams, work together in small or big groups on projects and say something positive to teammates on sports and for my friends.
Canadian children regularly play Hockey at their backyards, where parents create ice rinks with pails of water. These factors are advantages for people to become good hockey players. Hockey has been played for a long time in Canada and it has become a large part of Canada’s culture and heritage. Most Canadian people have great enthusiasm for Hockey.
There are many things that have molded me into the person I am today such as being born into a family with four children. With three siblings, I have been forced to be able to work out problems from stealing each other’s toys to having to rush to the emergency room to get stiches because my brother chased me around the house and I tripped. My mother, father, brother, and two sisters were all born in Pennsylvania and I am the odd ball and I was born in Adrian, Michigan. Hockey impacts Canadians at all levels including youth hockey, minor hockey and professional hockey in the NHL. As hockey is one of Canada’s national sports, it demonstrates how valued the sport is in Canada. Hockey to Canadians is not just a sport, but is also a means of community and unity. It is also one of the most widespread sports across Canada and influences Canadians directly through individual or family participation or indirectly by cheering for local or professional NHL teams or by watching Olympic hockey.
We were playing against the McAllen High School. I was a starter post on the team we were losing by 10 the first half of the game. We had 5 minutes of halftime the team and I were so upset that we were losing so we decided to pray to gain our confidence back. Once halftime was over starting five went back in we started well with defense once again, we stole some passes, but didn’t make all baskets to catch up to. Until last quarter I made 12 points and I was so happy to make 12 points for the to catch up against our opponent. Our team was still a few behind at the end of the game we didn’t win but I was proud of myself for making those 12 points for the team even if we did not win. My teammates and coaches were so proud of all of us not just me but of each one us for working together not to lose by a lot and not making ourselves look like fools. It was the first since tournaments that I realized that we had a great team that would support each other during a game. Success comes from people who believe in you and support you through things you go through. Success is nor found nor is it a miracle, success is created by you own self from being prepared of how to succeed in life and how you are going to get there because you cannot find success you have to make success find you in. It is a hard-hitting, fast faced and ability testing sport. “For many Canadians hockey is more than a sport – it's a way of life. Hockey parents spend every spare moment shuffling their children to and from the rink for every practice and game. Hockey players spend their entire lives improving stick handling skills, trying to skate with a little more speed, and studying the game with the hope that they can one day glide across the ice in front of throngs of screaming fans” . Hockey is seen as a Canadian symbol and national sport, and many believe has greatly impacted Canadian history, identity and culture.
It has also taught me to have a personal drive for a sport and to have motivation to become better at something. This sport has also done many things in my life that I will forever be grateful for. For instance this sport will now being pay for my entire college. Baseball has helped me connect with people all across the country and showed me how to be self confident in myself. My whole life I have played a sport. Whether that be soccer, or lacrosse, or field hockey. Playing a sport and being a part of a team was something I always knew how to do. I always knew how to play the sport as a team and not score on your own. My lacrosse team consisted of about 18-19 girls: 6 offenders, 6 defenders, 2 goalies, and the rest were mid-fielders. My favorite position was mid-fielder, I always enjoyed playing all the part that consisted of being on the team. I loved playing both defense and offense, I liked assisting with goals and I also loved stopping goals. My travel team taught me things that I did not learn anywhere else, my team taught me the true importance of teamwork, how to be a leader, or how winning is not always the most important thing.
Sports play a very important role in my life ever since I could walk. My interests in playing sports began at the age of three as my parents signed me up for soccer, flag football, basketball, and lacrosse. First grade started my competitive edge as I began to play for travel teams in various sport tournaments. This competitive edge transferred from the sports field to the classroom having teachers and coaches helping me be the best I can be. Sports have continually well-shaped and defined my character by teaching me how to accept a win from working hard, also how a loss is an opportunity to learn and fix mistakes.
When most people hear the word hockey, they think about skating, ice, and a puck. What most people do not think about is running, the blistering heat, and a small orange ball, however, I do. That is because I play dek hockey, not ice, meaning that we run, and our season is never over. Playing hockey is my favorite thing to do, and I have so many fond memories. Some of those memories are, playing hockey at Bill’s Golfland, U.S.A. Ball Hockey Tryouts, and playing at Penn Hills Dek Hockey.
A hobby I've held onto and cherished for a very long time was playing baseball. The sport was introduced to me by my father through the movie The Sandlot. The sport ended up holding a more significant meaning to me after I learned that both my Father and Grandfather played in their high school years. For me, Baseball laid down the foundation for my future and has been a positive force in my development since I was young.
Hockey. A sport I have always loved ever since I was a kid. It was when my dad had taken me to an open ice skate when my hockey life began. I had my first pair of skates as a present when I was four years old. I never really knew of the sport at the time, but now I was able to expirence it. No one was present on the ice as I entered the rink. The cold of the ice ran down my back as I took my first steps on. The cold didn’t stop me though. As I stepped upon the ice, I had a feeling of relief. Hockey is what let me go fast. Always have I been the fastest kid in my class and hockey let me expand on what I loved to do. One stride at a time I went, until I was able to glide upon the ice. My blades of my skates sunk into the ice like a lion tearing at its prey. As the frost beat against my face, I soon realized that I was able to skate. Even though it was all fuzzy in my memory, I remember feeling all types of joy rush all throughout my body. It was the first sign of potential in hockey. It was a first omen.
Throughout my early childhood, I went through several different phases. I practiced an abundance of different activities such as: dance, baseball, tumbling, gymnastics, and even baton. However, none of these sports or hobbies stuck. That is, until I discovered volleyball. Never have I felt the love for something as much as I did this sport. Volleyball has had an unimaginable impact on my life in so many ways. I would not be the person I am today if not for this sport.
