Thomas Jefferson served as President of the United States during the early 1800s. During his time as President, he made many decisions that affected the future of the US. Among these decisions was the purchase of the Louisiana Territory from France. Despite the many significant advantages of The Louisiana Purchase, it posed several significant moral dilemmas for President Thomas Jefferson, namely his perception of the extent of power given to the President in accordance with the Constitution.

He believed that the President had, and only had, the powers strictly expressed within the Constitution. He believed in a weaker central government, while he advocated for powers to be allocated to the smaller state governments. Alexander Hamilton, a strong rival of Jefferson’s and a federalist, believed the Constitution to be merely a guideline. Jefferson had previously argued with Hamilton’s “loose interpretation of the Presidential Powers,” and as such, could not go back on his word in order to buy the territory. The main source of dilemma for Jefferson was that the power to use United States funds in order to purchase territory was not expressed within the Constitution. The purchase would nearly double the land that the US owned. This would increase the amount of resources available to the US, and many new potential states could be formed from the mass amount of land. In his letter to John C. Breckinridge, Jefferson states that they may create a “range of states on the western bank from the head to the mouth” to accompany the rapidly increasing population (Thomas Jefferson to John C.
