“The Story of An Hour” written by Kate Chopin is a story about a woman, Louise Mallard, who has a heart problem and goes through many feelings as she finds out that her husband died in a railroad disaster. There are many themes this story can be about or have. Your emotions can change as quick as time passes is a theme this story has. Mrs. Mallard goes through many emotions throughout the story as she finds out about her husband’s death. At the beginning of the story Mrs. Mallard’s sister, Josephine, breaks the news of her husband’s death to her carefully because Mrs. Mallard had trouble in her heart. The evidence from this part of the story that supports my theme is “She wept at once, with sudden, wild abandonment, in her sister’s arm.” (3). This supports my theme because Mrs. Mallard was shocked about the news about her husband she just got randomly and she was heartbroken. Mrs. Mallard didn’t expect to find out about the news like this because in the story it said “She did not hear the story as many women have heard the same, with a paralyzed inability to accept its significance.” (3) …show more content…

Mallard gets the news she goes into her room to have some alone time. She’s in there for awhile so her sister goes and check on her but Mrs. Mallard locked the door, her sister was worried about her and thought she was making herself ill but Mrs. Mallard replies to her sister and says “Go away. I am not making myself ill.” (16) At this moment Mrs. Mallard was actually happy about her husband’s death the evidence that supports it is after she tells her sister she’s not making herself ill, “No; she was drinking in a very elixir of life through that open window.” (16) This supports my theme because Mrs. Mallard’s emotion changes quickly to sadness to happiness because she was finally free from the marriage life and following what her husband’s
