Lord of The Flies explores how a group of boys ultimately become savage after trying to ration resources. In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, a group of English boys are shot down while on a plane that crash lands onto an Island during World War II, where without any adults must survive on their own. They must overcome themselves and figure out how maintain a successful society. Through characterization and symbolism, William Golding asserts that man is innately savage and must be controlled through a civilized society. If we could only make barbs -” (Golding 53). The quote reveals how Jack believes that gathering meat for the tribe is more important than building much needed shelters that Ralph suggests. This is a clash between savagery and civilization. Ralph wants to build shelters for the tribe members so that everyone has a home. On the other hand, Jack is so hungry for meat that he ignores Ralph’s civilization perspective and is to focused on obtaining what is suitable for him and not the tribe or society. Another example is when Jack announces to in the meeting with all members that he will be creating his own society/tribe and they will hunt their own pigs rather than provide for Ralph. “I’m going off by myself. He can catch his own pigs. Anyone who wants to hunt when I do can come too” (Golding 127). Jack is upset that he must provide the food for the group and is not the leader of the society like Ralph. Unlike Ralph, Jack is all about killing animals and providing food rather than thinking about what’s best for the tribe. This shows his savagery when he lets hunting and killing animals get to him enough to the point where he creates his own tribe that
