Goldling wanted his audience to know what happens when younger people are brought into a new environment without any laws, little to no leadership or government, and basically a place where you have to build your own society without any help from the outside. In this new society the boys have to create their own society with their own laws and create a stable government. The title of the book is Lord of the flies the author is a British novelist named William Golding a British he wrote the book during WWII. What Golding aimed to do was explore the dark side of humanity and at what point would we look at each other as enemies. The main characters in the book that stood out the most were Ralph, Jack, Simon, Piggy, Samneric and Rodger. They are the ones who have had the most critical change in the story.

The boys try to set rules and create a fire in efforts of being rescued. The group of boys chooses Ralph to be their leader. This choosing makes a literary character named Jack, who doesn’t show his anger until half way through the plot. The novel shows the nature of humans and how fear can control them. The author, William Golding uses the main characters of Ralph, Jack, and Simon in The Lord of the Flies to portray how their desire for leadership, combined with lack of compromise leads to the fall of their society. This desire for leadership and compromise led to the fall of their society just like multiple countries during times of wars.
The boys find their id being challenged by their ego. Ego is described as the “part of the id which has been modified by the direct influence of the external world,” meaning it is the part of the psyche which suppresses basic impulses according to the norms or “rules” of a person’s situation (Freud 1923). In the initial days on the island, the boys actions are greatly affected by the rules of their previous society or their “ego.” When Roger was throwing rocks at the young boys, there was still “a space round Henry...into which [Roger] dare not throw.” Here, Roger is still affected by “the taboo of the old life” and still concerned with social norms as he hasn’t been on the island long enough to revert to his inner primitive nature (Golding 83). The boys are also being held back by something else- their desire for order and leadership. When Ralph and Piggy happen upon the conch, it isn’t ever seen as just a shell. They almost immediately see the conch as a way to gather the boys and a way to provide structured speaking. Ralph’s first thought is that they “ought to have a chief to decide things," because it’s what he and the other boys are used to (Golding 27). The positive reaction to the idea of having a chief shows their trust in leadership and societal structure. This democratic society does not last very long as the children (especially Jack) have a lack of respect for the conch and the rules. We can see this when Jack decides, “We don’t need the conch anymore, we know who should say things.” As the conch represents democracy we can see that civilisation on the island is braking up and savagery is starting to take over. We can also see a brake up in society when Jack says, “Bollocks to the rules!” Here we can see that Jack contradicts himself while managing to diminish the assembly and the power of the conch. Golding has made the two boys’ act similar at the beginning of the novel to show us how ‘normal’ they are. This demonstrates Golding’s view that absolutely anyone can be over ruled by power and become savage (like Jack) when civilisation collapses.
This conch is the only connection to the order and rules of the boys’ past lives, as there is no other influence on them in the isolated natural state of the island. The conch shell symbolizes the law and order among the children who trapped in the deserted tropical island. It is used to call the groups of the boys to assembly in a certain place. Ralph, the chief and the central leadership of the group is responsible to take care the conch. The conch shell represents the authority which the boys must obey. The conch is an instrument like a trumpet blowing to order the boys. Finally, the conch shell is broken down into pieces and the leadership is torn down and abandoned. Golding uses the conch shell, which Ralph and Piggy find, to demonstrate a source of leadership and order within the civilization. As the conch becomes a source of authority and assembly, it “becomes no less than the basic challenge to the Tribe to choose between democracy and anarchy, civilization and savagery” (Gregor). As order decreases within the civilization the boys are forced to choose between Ralph, who symbolizes order, and Jack, who symbolizes savagery and chaos. The boys quickly join forces with Jack, which is their first step of their decline into savagery. One of their final falls into savagery was when Roger rolled the boulder into Piggy and “the conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exist” (Golding 181). By the conch breaking, order on the island was completely gone and the physical violence began to increase as chaos started to occur. In Lord of the Flies, the author William Golding shows how under certain circumstances, man can become savage. During nuclear war, a group of British schoolboys crash land on an uninhabited island to escape. Ralph the elected leader, along with Piggy and Simon, tries to maintain civilization, while Jack and his group of choir boys turned hunters slowly become savages obsessed with killing. Through characters’ action and dialogue, Golding illustrates the transformation of civil schoolboys into bloodthirsty savages.
The island’s first government is a democratic one, created at the beginning of the novel. When the boys arrive on the island, two characters named Ralph and Piggy meet as they begin to look around the site where their plane has crashed. When they find a conch shell, they decide to use it to make a noise and call the other boys to a meeting. William Golding uses the conch shell throughout the book as a symbol of democratic government. Those assembled—except for Jack’s choir—vote that Ralph should be chief, and he sets up a democratic system where anyone is allowed to talk. This system involves using the shell like a talking stick: anyone who wants to talk holds the shell and everyone else must listen to what they have to say.
