We tend to make fun of each other on a daily basis. You may even have a specific friend who you always tease more than others. But if it begins to constantly hurt their feelings, then the situation can become an act of bullying. Bullying is the act of physical, mental, or verbal abuse on a person for one's self-pleasure. It's very common for one to be unaware that they're a bully because their actions are unintended to hurt someone. But if the bullying hurts a person's feelings and repeats over and over again, then that counts as bullying, too. Bullying can happen to anyone at any time. Society teaches us that looking a certain way is how you'll be accepted. This causes us to think that not being skinny or wearing old-fashioned clothing is all wrong. So it influences children and adults to put shame on those who don't follow society. It may not be a choice but in a way, we are subconsciously doing it. And through this, people are oppressing others and lowering their self-confidence. In the novel, Lord of the Flies, Piggy is bullied because of his appearance. He is the only one who wears glasses and he appears larger in weight than the rest, thus given the name Piggy to fit his looks. They are easy to pick on because the bully acts more superior. In Lord of the Flies, Jack and the other boys oppress Piggy by constantly telling him to keep quiet whenever he tries talking. They take away his privilege to receive fair treatment. Since Piggy feels like an outcast, he lets them treat him cold-heartedly. He's afraid to stand up for himself. Connecting this with reality, a victim of bullying begin to think being different is wrong. This gets to their head and they begin to lose their confidence.
