“Lord of Flies” Data Sheet My book for the summer reading program was the novel “Lord of Flies”. It was written by William Golding, and was last published by Penguin Group in New York in November 2011. Here’s a little info on the author. William Golding was born in 1911 in Cornwall England. He gained his education at Oxford University and the went on to publish his first book” Poems” in 1934. He also wrote many other books such as “Lord of Flies” in 1954 which he did while teaching school. William Golding not only wrote many books but ended up winning a Nobel Prize in literature for it! Sadly, he died in June of 1993. Continuing with the book “Lord of Flies” it was written only 9 years after World War Two. It also followed a stint in the Royal Navy. The book took place on a tropical island in the mid-20th century and was about a group of British boys stranded on an island in the middle of the ocean. The boys are fighting for survival any way they can and this in turn leads to the boys fighting each other. But there are other problems such as the fact that there is a beast on the island which one of the boys discover is not a living thing but something inside each of the boys. But the two that stood out the most where the beginning and the ending. It started by showing that the boys could come together and survive for however long it took. But by the end they fall apart and turn to savagery and end up killing Piggy and Simon. Then they have to be rescued by a navy vessel and the realize what they have done. A few symbols of this book where the conch, a seashell that when blown into acts like a horn. The signal fire which acted a symbol of hope and rescue.
