Anxiety is a topic that is important to my life, because it has been major part of it for a very long time. I have suffered from anxiety since I was in middle school, and while I eventually received the medicine I needed to cope with it, I wondered if there was anything my parents could have done to prevent it. It wasn’t until high school that I was finally diagnosed, even though I had extreme symptoms. This is because anxiety is considered a “silent disorder.” This means that parents can’t always tell their child is experiencing anxiety because there is nothing physically wrong with them that you can actually see. People suffering from anxiety can be subject to anxiety attacks, mood changes, overwhelming stress, and symptoms of depression. They can experience fatigue and are more likely to struggle with insomnia. People with anxiety will often have a hard time accomplishing easy, everyday tasks. Something as easy as ordering food at a restaurant can cause people with anxiety great distress. Long-term anxiety can affect the body’s ability to do its job. People who have had anxiety for a long time are not able to fight off bacteria and viruses as well as they used to. Unless you have anxiety, it is hard to understand the damaging effects it has on the body.
There is no one specific thing that causes anxiety. There are many things that are causing our children today to develop anxiety problems, including: genetics, environment, a traumatic event, lack of meaningful friendships, bullying, or experiencing little social interaction at a young age. Children who are never able to develop strong friendships with their classmates will often try to stay away from other people later on in their life. For three years, I felt intense anxiety from the moment I woke up, to the moment I went to bed, but it went completely unnoticed. I felt helpless. And while I told my parents, teachers, and school nurses, they all told me what I was feeling was normal. But it’s not. Parents struggle to see the difference between a normal amount of stress, and a disorder that is negatively affecting their child’s whole life. The stereotype that all preteens and teenagers are overdramatic, and stress for no reason is causing many of them to suffer silently. We need to shine a light on anxiety disorders and we need to start understanding them better. We need to change how we view mental disorders, and we need to stop overlooking anxiety. Instead of looking at what is wrong with today’s youth, we need to look at what is wrong with our parenting styles, school system, and society in general.
