Lobster: A Poor Man’s Food Evolves into a Wealthy Man’s Food
When do natural products become a delicacy? They become a delicacy when they become harder to find in their natural setting. This is what happened to the lobster and how the demands of the consumers changed. During Colonial times, the status of lobster was much different than today. It was once considered a poor man’s food. Now, it is considered a delicacy and found in many fancy dishes and at most higher priced restaurants. Today, lobster prices are high. If you want to eat a good lobster, you have to pay a decent price for it. The change in status of lobster occurred when the supply of lobster started to become depleted. As the sources of lobster were being depleted the demand increased in wealthier markets. This occurred because wealthier people could afford the higher prices created by a shrinking supply. The supply of the lobster population is what influenced the changing demands of the consumers.
When settlers first came to America, lobster was considered a poor man’s food. The lobsters were so abundant at that time that many people felt that they were competing with them for space on the shore. The settlers felt that the lobster had no nutritional value. At that time both Native Americans and settlers used the lobster as fertilizer for their fields and as bait to catch other fish. Lobster was so disdained that it was given to prisoners, indentured servants, and children. This was such a common practice that in Massachusetts many servants and prisoners had it put into their contract that they could not be fed lobster more than two times a week.
In the end, new technological innovations caused the disappearance of cheap lobster. Traps and smack boats were two technologies that greatly influenced the depleting lobster population. Lobstering changed from a hunting and gathering activity for local subsistence into a prosperous business enterprise. It became a business because fishermen were now trying to fill the demands of the consumers. The New Englanders were suddenly using lobster as a way to earn an income. New technologies helped them catch more lobsters to sell to more people. One of the new technologies invented was the use of traps to get the lobsters.
For that reason, many other innocent people are deathly afraid to leave their house. People cannot enjoy typical family time without even thinking that there might be a shooter ready to fire. It is such a shame that citizens of the United States do not even feel safe in their own country. In order for people to live peacefully; our crime rate needs to be lowered drastically. It is crazy to imagine that our country has one of the highest crime rates. We have crime rates thirty times higher than Great Britain and Australia. People are trying so hard to lower crime rates, but they always creep back up. The point is that in order for us, citizens, to live in a much safer and peaceful life, we need to try even harder to lower our crime
T.C. Boyle’s “Top of the Food Chain” is a narration about man’s selfish mistakes. The narrator's tone is used to show man’s disregard for organisms that have little to no benefit to them or are considered a nuisance. “The thing was, we had a little problem with the insects…” The narrator’s tone is quickly shown as selfish and works for only his comforts and is indifferent to the chaos that his choices make.

He majored in government and international relations at Harvard University. In 1961 Kennedy served as President until his assassination in 1963. John F. Kennedy influenced and touched the lives of people everywhere through his efforts with the Apollo 11 space mission, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the founding of the Peace Corps.
I believe David Foster Wallace’s aim for writing this piece was to explain his reasoning for killing and eating animals and to understand other people’s views on the issue as well. This is apparent throughout the writing. Wallace starts out by giving his personal description of the Maine Lobster Festival. He describes how it takes place July 30th through August 3rd, thousands of people come to the festival every year, its broadcasted on live television by CNN, and about 25,000 fresh lobsters are eaten over the course of the festival. Additionally, he goes into the biology of the lobster such as the scientific name and evolution. Leading up to this, he states the question for writing this piece, “Is it alright to boil a sentient creature alive for our gustatory pleasure” (p.9 Wallace)?

Kennedy was a young and fresh political figure at the time of his election in 1960. The thirty-fifth president of the United States was born May 29, 1917, in Brookline, Massachusetts. He was the youngest president ever, as well as the first and only Roman Catholic president (Bass, et al.). His presidency was shortened by an assassin on November 22, 1963, in Dallas, Texas. Kennedy preceded his presidency with a term in the U.S. House of Representatives (1947-1953) and a term in the U.S. Senate (1953-1961) (“John F. Kennedy” History.com). Kennedy, a charismatic and energetic leader, was loved by the American people. He had many plans for his time in office, some of which he was able to personally achieve, while others were left to his vice-president, Lyndon B. Johnson. Although his life was tragically cut short, John F. Kennedy left an indelible mark on the United States of America in and out of the oval office.
The central idea of the paragraph entitled “Restaurants in hot water with PETA for serving still-moving octopus, shrimp”, written by Los Angeles Times, is that live slaughter of seafood is not right and that this item should be taken off the table. Firstly, the author of the Newsela article states that, “The group hopes consumers will pressure legislators to ban the practice. But the organization hinted it may not stop there. "We're taking no other options off the table until live animals themselves are taken off the table," said spokesman Ben Williamson.” This is explaining that they are trying really hard to get live seafood off the menu, but they will have a hard time succeeding. Going to a Japanese restaurant for Bluefin tuna sushi or a fish and chip restaurant for Atlantic cod is a luxury that many people enjoy. However, these consumers may not know that they are eating endangered species. Do consumers put too much trust in the government and fisheries? Should they pay more attention to the source of their food? This essay will address the issue of where the responsibility of conserving ocean-life lies. The responsible parties are national governments, fisheries, and consumers. If these parties have an interest in the future of sea-life, the fishing industry, and seafood, then they all need to take responsibility for protecting endangered species from overfishing.
It plays a big role in his argument because he his arguing about a person’s preference to eat lobster(s). He also uses preference in a few different ways throughout his argument. First, when he is discussing the ways to prepare a lobster he talks about the different “preferences” that people have. He states how some chefs cut the lobster in half before boiling it, others microwave it, and the obvious one boiling. These are all preferences based on the person doing the cooking. Secondly, on page 469, when talking about the lobsters he brings up a theory that the lobsters have preference(s). In this case, he is using preference to mean instinct. Their preference can lead them to “detect changes in water temperature.” Another way he talks about lobsters having a preference is when they are in the ocean “lobsters will always congregate in whatever part is darkest” (Wallace, 470). They also have a fondness for space “they clearly dislike the crowding that’s part of their captivity in tanks”. To fish or not to fish is a personal choice. The fact that the oceans are being overfished is a growing concern for individuals, organizations, and governments throughout the world. In this paper I want to discuss the effects of overfishing on the restaurant industry, and possible solutions to solve the problem. Fishing is an ongoing source of food for people around the world. In many countries it is a food staple in their everyday diet. In more modern societies eating fish has become a sensual experience, and not just for the wealthy. It hasn't been until population explosions in the last century that the demand for seafood has led to more effective fishing techniques and technologies. Now the demand for popular fish like the salmon, tuna, sea bass, cod and hoki, which is the key fish in McDonalds filet o' fish, is diving wild populations to dangerously low levels. The methods used to catch the amount of fish demanded by the industry do not leave sustainable populations in the wild. In an attempt to preserve the fish population, governments have set limits on the minimum size that may be harvested and how many of each may be taken. Boundaries have been set up saying which areas can be fished and which ones should be left alone. A number of smaller fisheries have gone out of business because of the limits imposed by the government. This leads to even less fish being harvested and brought to market. Therefore the amount and varieties of fish at markets are smaller and can cause shortages for wholesalers and restaurants. America has more people owning firearms than any other country in the world. 79% of firearms that were used in mass shootings were legally purchased unfortunately. Sadly, 75% of people used semi automatic guns to kill people in incidents. Assault weapons were used in 40% of incidents. People should not be able to get their hands on assault rifles or semi automatic guns; America needs to change gun laws. According to a 2013 survey, many people who decide to take lives have shown signs of mental illness, but in only two cases was there a prior diagnosis. It needs to be required that people must have a background check done for gun sales between private individuals and licensed dealers. Some studies have found that reducing access to guns would result in less crime. John Lott who wrote More guns, Less crimes, completed a study in the 1990’s that said the right to carry firearms decreased homicides up until 1992.
