Literary Analysis of Unbroken Introduction Laura Hillenbrand effectively illustrates Louis Zamperini’s story in the nonfiction novel Unbroken. This effect can be found through the analysis of the novel. A discussion will ensue about Miss Hillenbrand’s development of the plot and characters. Included in this discussion is will be Miss Hillenbrand’s use of synesthesia and the setting. Plot Miss Hillenbrand effectively uses the plot to tell the story of Louie Zamperini. The story, at one point, takes a turn for the worse, when the Japanese bomb the island that the crew of the Super Man that are left after the bombing of Nauru are staying on (Ten). In literature, synesthesia is when a writer presents ideas, characters, or places by appealing to more than one modality at a time (“Synesthesia - Examples and Definition of Synesthesia”). A good example of this is the Olympic trial in New York. Miss Hillenbrand very vividly describes how hot it was that summer while simultaneously speaking of the sounds to be heard and the sights to be had (Three). This is synesthesia at it’s finest: the ready feeling the heat of the city, seeing all the people lined up around them, and then hearing the crack of the gun. This is what keeps the reader coming back for more and at the same time feeling like they are there, beside Louis during the entire novel. Miss Hillenbrand tied together smaller individual plots into one big one, to make it feel more like real life. She made the characters change as much as possible between the beginning of the book and the end. In addition to that, Miss Hillenbrand also used a technique of portraying events, people, and places using a wide variety of sensations at the same time, which is called synesthesia. Lastly, she made sure to not leave out any details in the setting that would have left questions in the minds of the readers.
