Literary Analysis of “Harrison Bergeron” By: Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.
Imagine a world where everyone is made equal, but not created equal. This is what Kurt Vonnegut Jr. creates in his short story “Harrison Bergeron”. In this story Vonnegut Jr. uses setting, point of view, tone, and symbols to make this story a successful ironic story. In "Harrison Bergeron" the author demonstrates a futuristic world where they install “handicaps” to people who are above average, making their lives "normal" like the others and taking their critical thinking abilities away.
The setting of this story plays an important role in the meaning of “Harrison Bergeron”. It takes place in 2081 United States. People wear “handicaps” to make them normal. No one is smarter, stronger, or more attractive than any other person, thanks to handicaps. People wear heavy bags, radio’s to distract them, and masks over their faces which that the handicapper general assigns them for the sake of normality. makes use of many themes in this short story. The handicaps are a law of the land but the fact the characters actually believe that it’s all for good represents the theme of manipulation. The theme of manipulation occurs when the characters are not upset that their son was taken by the Handicapper General and then shot dead right in front of them. They should be upset and at least shocked that their son was just killed, but instead they have forgotten all about it. George and Hazel support these handicaps which hinder them. When Hazel tells George to take out some of the handicap weights he denies the offer and tells Hazel that kind of thinking will bring them to the past where everyone competed. They are content with the handicaps and are manipulated to never think any
