Faith and Reason “So tell me, since it makes no factual difference to you and you can’t prove the question either way, which story do you prefer? Which is the better story, the story with animals or the story without animals? Mr. Okamoto: ‘That’s an interesting question?’ Mr. Chiba: ‘The story with animals.’ Mr. Okamoto: ‘Yes. The story with animals is the better story.’ Pi Patel: ‘Thank you. And so it goes with God’ (Life of Pi).” Two stories were represented in a fictional and nonfictional way in the movie Life of Pi but the fictional story is no less true then the factual story despite the imaginative overlay. Truth therefore is subjective, it is a person’s relationship between reason and faith that makes something true. It is such that there is room for doubt to challenge reason and faith, in order to fully comprehend the greater truth. Moreover, the ocean waters can reflect a higher truth represented by religious viewpoints. In the Life of Pi the oceans harsh waves and traitorous cruelties aided to the suffering that Pi experienced but was given hope when the ocean was working for him and not against him such as when the fish came flying through the air to relieve his hunger. Thus, reason would explain that there are an abundant amount of fish inhabiting the water and starvation didn’t need to be an option, while religious reason would state that God never left his side and eased his suffering by providing food to end his hunger. Both explanations still have the same outcome and truths however it is up to the person to believe in a truth of divine reality or factual conception, either way will make a person’s beliefs true no matter which story they
