Being driven by my passion and strong belief that every child should have access to a high-quality education. I started my doctoral degree in educational administration and leadership; to become an educational leader to guide and direct young minds. A longstanding national issue that continues to concern the public is the disproportionate representation of children from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds in special education. The fact is that the proportion of minority students in the population of school-age children has risen dramatically to over 35%, which is increasing the diversity of students in many public schools throughout the nation. This makes the phenomenon of disproportionality especially troubling. With a growing population of minority children comprising a greater percentage of public school students, we must be responsive to the growing needs of an increasingly diverse society. The overrepresentation of minority students in special education has been posed as an issue for more than 3 decades, but it is worth asking whether the efforts of legislative actions, educational reforms and legal challenges have really made improvements to this issue. More importantly, disproportionality should be examined as a correlation to underlying conditions that can pose a great effect upon not only the quality of a child’s education, but also ______.
Did you know that over two thirds of special education students receive services for non-mental health issues, among these students 17% have serious behavior as well as emotional issues compared to over 51% of special education students with mental health issues and 4% of students not in special education (Pastor and Ruben)? My research paper will first explain what Special Education actually is and it will focus on the issues that arise when disciplinary actions are called for and what is to be considered the most appropriate and effective forms of discipline in special education. It will also cover the most common issues that arise in special education as well as what strategies are effectively administered to solve these issues. My research paper will also take an in-depth look into special education students with non-mental health issues. It also will look at some misconceptions of special education students.
Unfortunately, my family and I fall into an area of the middle class that prohibits us from receiving need-based aid. Although I have graciously been awarded the Elizabeth Ann Seton Scholarship, without some additional form of aid, a Seton Hill education may be prohibitively expensive. My fourth year’s tuition alone would cost $37,520 with my current scholarship, and I would still have to pay for living expenses. Once my undergraduate and fifth years’ expenses are included, I will be over $150,000 in debt when I graduate. As a student who has worked exceedingly hard in the classroom and as a leader for four years, this amount of financial burden feels like a punishment. City Workshop, Richard Lavoie is able to simulate several of the difficulties that a student with a learning disability has to face at school. Some of the difficulties experienced by the students are intrinsic to the disability itself, but many other difficulties are directly related with the emotions that the student experiences when attending a class, and as a result of his or her interactions with teachers and classmates. Both the United States law and the education system, have the opportunity to make a huge difference in the learning experience of every student with disability. Students with disabilities need to be guided to a path to education that is both feasible and accessible for them; with achievable goals, and by being provided what they need in order to succeed, and to be able to overcome any obstacles.

Two years ago, I embarked on a journey that would teach me more than I had ever imagined. As a recent college graduate, I was thrilled to finally begin my teaching career in a field I have always held close to my heart. My first two years as a special education teacher presented countless challenges, however, it also brought me great fulfillment and deepened my passion for teaching students with special needs. The experiences I have had both before and after this pivotal point in my life have undoubtedly influenced my desire to further my career in the field of special education.
The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 states that a person with a disability (1) has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, (2) has a record of such an impairment, or (3) is regarded as having such an impairment (42 USC 12101 [2]). Students with disabilities experience specific struggles that negatively impact their academic and social engagement. However, their needs are often not met by higher education institutions in comparison to other student identities. This comes from the stigma in our society surrounding disabilities. Children are taught from a young age that it is inappropriate ask an individual with a disability about their experience. These children grow up to be adults who feel uncomfortable being around those who may have a disability.
During my research for this paper there was so much I knew about special education already. In our Intro to Education class we talked about a lot with this program. As a teacher you have to have your stuff together so you don’t get the students files mixed up. You also have to know exactly what you are doing. This whole thing can be so stressful. You have to make sure the students goals are not too much. Special Education teachers are hard to find. But when you get one you keep them for a long time.
It is noticeable that in the UK for parents who have children with “Special Educational Needs” have been made nearly all necessary conditions that pupils need to. For instance, parents may apply for their children on the Government website which conducts to the UK’s citizenship many services including “Special Educational Needs”. People whose children have disability might choose any school in turns schools must publish information on their website regarding Government’s rules of teaching special educational needs children. Turning now to the question of database which shows that in England amount of the children with special educational needs lessened from 1.62 million pupils in 2011-2012 and 1.55 million in 2012-2013, though the number of learners with statements of special educational needs increased slightly from 226.125 pupils in 2011-2012 to 229.390 pupils in 2012-2013 the database relating to the Government’s website. It means, each of fifth pupils in England are said to have special educational needs (21%). As an example British Broadcasting Company (BBC) observes “the greater classes are "decelerate learning difficulty" (24.2%), societal difficulties and behavioural, emotive (22.7%) and language, speech and relations needs (16.3%). A less ratio of pupils have physical disabilities (3.8%), visual or hearing impairments (3.4%), and autism spectrum (8.1%). Furthermore, children from any segments of society can have special educational needs, but indeed it is commonly among some section of the society. For example, at secondary school, girls are three times less likely to have a statement than boys. Chinese children are most likely not to have special educational needs, while Black children are the greatest likely. Learners with special educational needs are mostly to be appropriate for free school meals than those without them. All state schools are under the control of UK’s law to guarantee that special help is provided for children with special educational needs. It is correctly to mention that there is a program called “school action” under which more than half of pupils with special educational needs are listed. If other support is needed, the child is listed as "school action plus", which may involve the school bringing in specialist help from outside”.

The number of children with special educational needs and disability (SEND) in England is over 1.2 million with over 230,000 having statements or education, health and care plans, a number which has continued to rise over the years (Department for education, 2016). Described by the department for education (2014, p.7) as “Children and young people with SEN all have learning difficulties or disabilities that make it harder for them to learn…”.
