Is a genius born or made? In Leonhard Euler’s case, he was born. He was one of the most promising mathematicians of all time and his name is known throughout the entire world of mathematics. Euler was born April 15, 1707, in Basel, Switzerland. He was plain and honest in his character, and had a strong religious faith. His religion was called protestant. The protestant faith believed in similar faiths as Christians, however; they practiced that originated with doctrines and religious, political, and ecclesiological. He tied the knot with Katharina Gsell in 1734. The married couple had a great amount of children, however; only five of those offspring lived past their father. His first born child, Johann Albrecht Euler, was to become a mathematician himself and later in life was to serve Euler as one of his assistants. The couples were wed for 39 years until Katharina tragically died. Later on in his life, Euler remarried to Katharina’s half-sister. He began his mathematical journey by getting introductory math instructions from his father, Paul Euler. Paul Euler was considered to be a mathematician in their village, but his occupation was the village priest. Young Leonhard Euler was greatly inspired by his fathers close friend Johann Bernoulli. Bernoulli was one of the first mathematicians in Europe and saw greatness in Euler causing him to discontinue the lessons on theology and begin the lessons on mathematics. Johann Bernoulli was also a Swedish mathematician that was very well-known for contributions to infinitesimal calculus. Leonhard Euler joined the University of Basel at the age of thirteen. He altered his choice of study multiple times. First, he began studying theology and oriental languages. After, he changed his mind a...

...ere given the opportunity to be introduced to his inspiring work. Even though Euler was a mathematician, he also gave several memoirs into the astronomy field. His achievements would dominate from 60 to 80 quarto volumes. No other mathematician can compare Leonhard Euler to the amount of donations made in these fields. Euler would not stop until he found the solution. Despite his hard times such as, his wife passing away, his visual impairment, and his constant moving he continued to prove problems and open our minds to new solutions. Euler was an excellent mathematician and always found a way to change the world. His endless respect and constant praise from others built him up to the legacy he is today. His countless contributions will continue on into the future and his name will live on. Was a genius born or did he work his have the amount of knowledge he had?
