Leonardo da Vinci was born on April 15, 1452 in a farmhouse in the hills of Tuscany outside the village of Anchiano, in what is now known as Italy. He was born out of wedlock to Florentine notary Ser Piero and a peasant woman named Caterina. He got his last name, Vinci from the place where he moved to live with his father, stepmother, uncle, and grandparents. Even though he didn’t get a lot of education except for basic reading, writing, and math but he had a lot of artistic skills.
He joined as an apprentice under Andrea del Verrocchio in Florence at the age of 14. He learned a lot of things like metalworking, carpenting, drawing, painting, and sculpting while working under her. His earliest sketch that is known to us of a pen and ink drawing was sketched in 1473. He continued to work with his teacher even after he qualified for a membership as a major artist in Florence’s Guild of Saint Luke and established his own workshop at the age of 20. He however left the city without ever completing it. In 1482, Florentine rule asked him to create a silver Lyre and bring it as a peace offering to Ludovico Sforza. After doing this he sent a letter to the future Duke of Milan asking for a job as a military engineer. He didn't mention anything about his artistic talents in that letter.
