Leonardo da Vinci was born on April 15, 1452 in a farmhouse in the hills of Tuscany outside the village of Anchiano, in what is now known as Italy. He was born out of wedlock to Florentine notary Ser Piero and a peasant woman named Caterina. He got his last name, Vinci from the place where he moved to live with his father, stepmother, uncle, and grandparents. Even though he didn’t get a lot of education except for basic reading, writing, and math but he had a lot of artistic skills.
He joined as an apprentice under Andrea del Verrocchio in Florence at the age of 14. He learned a lot of things like metalworking, carpenting, drawing, painting, and sculpting while working under her. His earliest sketch that is known to us of a pen and ink drawing was sketched in 1473. He continued to work with his teacher even after he qualified for a membership as a major artist in Florence’s Guild of Saint Luke and established his own workshop at the age of 20. It is said that he painted part of the background and the young angel holding the robe of Jesus in the painting “Baptism of Christ” around 1475 to help his teacher.

He however left the city without ever completing it. In 1482, Florentine rule asked him to create a silver Lyre and bring it as a peace offering to Ludovico Sforza. After doing this he sent a letter to the future Duke of Milan asking for a job as a military engineer. He didn't mention anything about his artistic talents in that letter. The Italian Renaissance was full of brilliant and gifted artists, scientists and inventors but Leonardo da Vinci was the most omniscient of them all. For someone who was able to obtain the amount of knowledge that he knew and to associate all of his works with each other is beyond extraordinary and he is considered one of the smartest people of all time.
Michelangelo was an Italian-born artist in 1488. Not too long after his birth, he was apprenticed to Ghirlandaio for three years, where Michelangelo learned elements of fresco technique and produced replicas of past Florentine masters. By the age of 16, Michelangelo was already producing his own style of art that were shown in his two relief sculptures. The following years after the death of Lorenzo de’ Medici in 1492, Michelangelo traveled and created more artwork. Some of the artworks produced were a wooden crucifix for the high altar for the Hospital of Sto Spirito, and marble statuettes for the Arca di San Domenico.

In 1482, at the age of thirty, Leonardo moved to Milan and gained favor of the duke of Milan, Ludovico Sforza due to his singing voice and talent on the flute (Kalz 23). When Leonardo was born his father, Piero Fruosino di Antonio da Vinci took custody of him while his mother, Caterina da Vinci went off and married another man. By the age of 15 is when da Vinci’s talents really start to shine. The soon to be prestigious artist got his first real chance when he was to paint an angel in “Verrochio’s Baptism of Christ”. Verrochio was at the time a well regarded artist himself. When da Vinci was finished, his work was so much better than his masters that Verrochio actually swore to never paint again. After that work da Vinci was in search of new challenges and his break financially da Vinci entered the service of the Duke of Milan. The job was nice but it wasn’t what Leonardo wanted. The Duke kept him busy by painting, sculpting and designing court festivals but Leonardo didn’t have much freedom in his work.

His curiosity, patience, drive, and independent way of thought are the characteristics that made him such an eminent Renaissance man. Having a deep sense of curiosity allowed him to use the world around him to make many discoveries. His patience gave him the ability to create elaborately detailed, intricate works of art, weaponry, and other experiments. As a boy, Michelangelo was sent to Florence to study grammar. The young boy had no interest in his schooling, preferring to copy paintings from churches and seek the company of painters. During this time, the city of Florence was a center of the arts and learning in Italy. When he was only fourteen years old, Michelangelo was apprenticed to Ghirlandio, a master of fresco painting. Nineteenth century British biologist T.H. Huxley famously said, “Try to learn something about everything and everything about something (Quotes by…). This statement is reflective of the idea of a polymath, or the Renaissance man, that is, one whose expertise spans a significant variety of subjects and fields (Oxford Dictionaries). Leonardo da Vinci not only encapsulated this ideal but also ultimately was the model of the Renaissance man for centuries to follow. As many already know, Leonardo da Vinci was most famously as an artist, whose paintings have remained some of the most recognized and iconic images for over 500 years, but his genius did not end in the arts.
