Renaissance Artist: Leonardo Da Vinci
The Renaissance was a time of “rebirth” for Italy. There were many artists in the Renaissance era such as Michelangelo, Raphael, Donatello, and Leonardo Da Vinci. All of those artists had many skills, a good education and was amazing at art and sculptures. Leonardo Da Vinci painted the “Mona Lisa” and “The Last Supper” which are some of the most famous paintings in the world and are now in museums for all of us to see. The most significant Renaissance artist is Leonardo Da Vinci.
Leonardo had a lot of skills that helped him show individualism and had a good education since he was an apprentice which helped him become a master in art. Besides him,”... painting masterpieces, Leonardo made scientific studies, dissections observations, and research on engineering and anatomy.”(DBQ Source) Leonardo got to learn more things with helped him show realism in his art work, and because he showed realism it makes us want to exam it since it looks real. Leonardo Da Vinci was one of the most famous artists during the time of the Renaissance, The Mona Lisa for example, was a painting created between 1503 and 1506, it is the most famous painting ever painted. It is a portrait of the young wife of a Florentine silk merchant. It shows a young woman with her famous smile sitting on a balcony high above a landscape.
Leonardo da Vinci was a famous painter, sculptor, and inventor that lived from 1452-1519. He was born in a small Italian town of Vinci and lived on a small estate that his father owned. Leonardo kept the name of the town that he was born in for his last name. Since his mother did not marry his father, he could not inherit his father’s land, nor did he have much going for him as a wealthy businessman. When people think of Leonardo da Vinci, they mostly associate him with art and paintings, such as his famous Mona Lisa and The Last Supper. Leonardo believed that art was correlated to science and nature. Da Vinci was largely self-educated and he filled endless notebooks with examinations and suppositions about pursuits from aeronautics to anatomy.
Leonardo Da Vinci was a spectacular artist who was known for far more in his lifetime than just a few simple paintings. He was an architect, engineer, physicist, inventor, painter and sculptor. Leonardo was encouraged in his talents by his father, and spent time in various schools and apprenticeships to learn various methods of creation. While Leonardo is well known for many crafts, his use of light and shadows and the efforts of discovery he used to excel his paintings to new heights are the focus of my readings.
Leonardo was born April 15, 1452 he was the son of Ser Piero and Caterina. Leonardo's father was a landlord, and his mother was a peasant and they both were not married at the time. Leonardo lived with his father and had an education. Later on his father moved the family to Florence( Heydenreich). At the age of 15 Leonardo was showing that he was a great painter. In 1467 he became an apprentist to Andrea Del Verrochio a very well known artist during that time period. He became a member of Verrochio's workshop where he received an education in a huge variety of areas.(Giorgio). In another workshop of Antonio Pollaiuolo, Leonardo studied anatomy, and animals. He was accepted into painters guild in Florence. An early work by Leonardo was an angel painting for the Baptism of Christ artwork.After Verrochio viewed the artwork he thought it was time for Leonardo to move on and do other things. Later on Leonardo became an independent painer and later moved to Milan where he worked for Ludovico Sforza. During that time Leonardo created one of his most famous artworks The Last Supper. Later on his career he became a journalist in which he would write down his obeservations , and findings. Perspective art was all very new to the Renaissance period at the time. Who is your favorite Renaissance painter? Leonardo da Vinci is a major deal in the Italian Renaissance. His achievements further him to a leading spot and to be a figure/ model in the Italian Renaissance. Leonardo da Vinci may be most famous for his artworks as an artist, but he also spent time working on his inventions in science and technology as well.
The Renaissance was the rebirth of Europe and it all started in the city of Florence. Florence and everything that made a standard Renaissance city: painters, sculptors, writers, architects, and a vivid culture. Soon all of Europe would follow in Florence’s footsteps and “the setting is so rich, varied, rambunctious, and inventive as Italy in the Renaissance” (Cohen 1). The painters and sculptors defined Renaissance culture and could actually make a living because they were being sponsored.
Leonardo da Vinci was the first artist to define many different artistic movements. He was also known for creating new ideas and inventions that are now used practically. Also because of his cleverness, he was often called a universal genius (Summers) showing how smart he was. Way back in those Renaissance times, he was known for painter, sculptor, architect, engineer, scientist, mathematician, inventor, anatomist, botanist, musician, and a writer, but recently he is mostly known as an artist and his talents. Although years have been past after the Renaissance, da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa” and “The Last Supper” remain as the best piece ever painted!
“The Renaissance Man”, Leonardo Da Vinci himself was an amazing artist who studied many things in nature and created beautiful works of art to advance the modern way of art. He studied through his senses and showed emotion through the different art mediums. Da Vinci did this because they didn’t have access to taking photos so he thought this would be a great way to show the world through his eyes. He was an innovator of art by sharing his world through painting and drawings. Da Vinci is a influential advocate of science through his actions including anatomy drawings, nature drawings, animal paintings and continued to inspire other artists. Leonardo Da Vinci is a famed artist today due to his renowned painting of the ‘Mona Lisa’. In the 14th century, people of Venice would have known him as an engineer, people of Milan would have known him for his Last Supper, but only the people of Florence would have seen his whole character. Da Vinci is known as the archetypal Renaissance man, a man of “unquenchable curiosity” and “feverishly inventive imagination”. Da Vinci created many technologies and new innovations which were so advanced for his time and age that many scholars did not believe him. He contributed to civilisation through three main areas: art, science and engineering.
Leonardo da Vinci was born on April 15, 1452, in a small town in Italy called Vinci which was in the territory of Florence. His parents were Ser Piero and Caterina, who was a peasant girl. They were never married so he was considered an illegitimate child. So shortly after his birth, Ser Piero, a 25 year old notary, took custody of him. His parents each married other people and kept having children, giving Leonardo 17 half sisters and brothers. Growing up with his father in Florence, the aristocratic and artistic center of Italy, he was given the best education the city could offer. In 1466, when he was 15 his father sent him to be an apprentice to Adrea del Verrocchio, who was a famous painter and artist of that time. As an apprentice he was taught many things such as painting altarpieces and panel pictures to creating sculptures with marble and bronze. During his time as an apprentice he shocked his master with his tremendous talent. In fact he is admitted to the painter’s guild of Florence in 1472 even though he was still Verrochio’s assistant.
The Italian Renaissance included some of the greatest artists we have ever seen from Leonard Da Vinci, to Michelangelo, and Raphael. The Renaissance took place from the late thirteenth to sixteenth centuries and is know as the ‘rebirth’. The idea that the rebirth of the arts after being asleep for a thousand years is an amazing thing to grasp. This time brought back light to liberal arts, which were on the brink of being extinct. (Murray 2) What is also interesting about art during this time was that most of the art had Christian in its roots, for example, Botticelli’s The Allegory of Spring (Faure 1) is said to have had a Christian interpretation. (Murray) “Every Italian artist, willingly took the title of architect, sculptor, and painter” (Faure 2). At the beginning of the fifteenth century, the Italian painters had asked the Flemish painters for their secret techniques because the Italians felt like the language of painting was one that was always meant for them. (Faure 4) The sculptors claimed their inspiration from ancient works. Lastly the Renaissance introduced idea of individualism, which helped the Italians get away from everything that was going on during that time. Art during the Renaissance included painting, sculpting and architecture, all of which were an important part in expressing the idea of individualism and making art what is is today.

It is said that the academics of Leonardo’s time did not take into consideration his work in any other field than painting, because he did not have a formal education. Instead he had developed an important attitude at a young age towards his critics, where he wrote “I cannot quote from eminent authors as they can, these trumpeters and reciters of the works of others. I know that all knowledge is vain and full of error when it is not born of experience, and so experience will be my mistress”. Leonardo da Vinci was a mysterious man who most definitely left his impact on the world, his time and modern time. A lot of people say Leonardo was a genius others say he was a complete mastermind who was ahead of his time, one thing for sure is that he was very talented.

This man masters knowledge of all kind: painting, architecture, music, geology, philosophy, biology, math, physics, chemistry, etc. His probably most famous painting, Mona Lisa, fascinated millions of people around the world and the amazing and mysterious details in the painting attracted a number of scientists and scholars to devote their whole career in studying them. Born and lived in Italian Renaissance age, which is a period of time when arts flourished and knowledge was valued, Leonardo was surrounded by many great contemporary artists and a perfect creative environment. These favorable factors supported him to fully exercise his talents.
