The holocaust was a time in history where the Jewish people were stripped of their humanity, dignity and lives. Hitler's insidious rise to power and ability to brainwash made the people of Germany believe what the nazis were doing was right and just. The bigotry and anger was already in the hearts of some Germans due to their loss in World War I, as well as the economic downfall Germany experienced. Even for those who were not brainwashed, Hitler's heinous abuse of power took away their courage to stand up for what was truly right. Fortunately enough for the Jewish people, individuals such as Leon Platteau stood up for what was right and had enough courage to risk his own life to aid the Jewish people during these dark times. …show more content…

These children would be told that they were going to a “school” and shuffled into a van that turned out to be a gas chamber. Holocaust from Latin translates to genocide, Hitler wanted to eradicate the Jewish people. Leon was able to help save people, unfortunately many still lost their lives. Leons role in politics gained him connections with Yvonne Nevejean who was the director of the National Childhood Office in Belgium. It was through her that Leon gained the connection to the Committee of Defense and fight vigorously to ensure the safety of the children. In the end Leon played a leading role in saving over three thousand Jewish children. Leon aided by sending money to the Committee of Jewish Defence, which allowed them to keep children alive each month. It was said that Leon protested in a mannerism such as Queen Elizabeth, not only did his financial contributions help but the wonderful message he gave to people through his continuous activism. “These are the times that try men’s souls.” -Thomas Paine, The American Crisis. During these hopeless times while many lost hope, Leon Platteau gave others hope to cling on to. I don’t believe many other modern politicians would take the stand that Leon took.
There are similarities between how Hitler created more hate in his people and how Donald Trump is doing the same with ours. Hitler used blaming as a tactic in the same way Trump does with Muslims and Latinos. Hitler blamed Germany's problems on the Jewish people in the same fashion Trump points blame on Latinos for the loss of jobs and other problems America
