Picture yourself as an NFL football player. A football player that goes to practice everyday and then plays on Sundays. Everyday grown men hurl themselves at you and each other for hours a day. So, you go home and take some opiate medicine the team doctor perscribed to you. You don’t know what’s in it, but the the doc gave it to you so you just take it. Unfortunately, that drug gives you a side effect, so you go back to the tea doctor and get a new opiate drug for that side effect. The side effect goes away, but now that drug gives you a new side effect. So, you can see how this vicious cycle works. All of these drugs are called opioid painkillers. For years, doctors have prescribed marijuana to patients to cure certain disorders, diseases, and syndromes, however not until recently has there has been conversation around marijuana helping to heal physical soreness and injuries. The most concentrated chemical in marijuana is THC. THC is the active chemical in marijuana that gives the user a “mind high”. This helps to mask the pain for a few hours. However, along with THC, the chemical that gets you “high”, there is another active chemical in marijuana called CBD. “Cannabidiol —CBD—is a cannabis compound that has significant medical benefits, but does not make people feel “stoned”” (“What is CBD”). Different than THC, CBD doesn’t give the user a “high”, but it significantly helps with short term and chronic pain. “[CBD] an appealing option for patients looking for relief from inflammation, pain, anxiety, psychosis, seizures, spasms, and other conditions” (“What is CBD”). Looking at all the benefits of both THC and CBD, it can be seen that a balanced strain of marijuana can provide temporary pain relief as well as long term healing. Now, let's look at the healing benefits of marijuana versus the benefits of opioids. Many studies have shown that CBD reduces inflammation 20 times more than the common anti-inflammatory medication ibuprofen (Advil, Tylenol, etc.). Football, being a full contact sport, causes many bumps and bruises that cause inflammation. Football players also go through major periods of depression and anxiety. CBD has also been proven to reduce the effects of anxiety and depression. In addition, CBD and other chemicals in marijuana have been shown to help heal the aftermath of concussions in the brain. Unfortunately, there haven’t been enough research to prove this, although many doctors and nonprofits have begun funding new tests and experiments to find out what other impacts
