In the past marijuana was not particularly popular, in fact it was typically frowned upon, at least in Canada and North America, however in recent history marijuana use has increased, especially in the medical fields, and thus extensive research into medical uses of marijuana has grown. Due to this, marijuana has also become embedded in our culture among many others from around the world. In some research, marijuana was actually used in ancient civilizations for recreational purposes as well as religious, ritual, and medical uses. In Canada, the recently elected Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, is looking to decriminalize marijuana which also includes medical marijuana, for there is no current law that actually legalizes marijuana. Although some research suggests that marijuana may not be the healthiest, there is without a doubt evidence that marijuana does have many medicinal benefits according to various research. With legalization of medical cannabis, prohibition of it will no longer be necessary, thus allowing officers to be more focused and dedicated to more serious issues that occur, and even when legalized, it is unlikely that marijuana use will increase. Finally marijuana is in fact less harmful to the body than alcohol or tobacco according to various research and legal cases within Canada and abroad.
2. Cases
In Canada there have been legal cases revolving around medical marijuana use, and various policies regarding it. This section of the paper will review more recent cases, found here in Canada. In one case it was ruled by the Supreme Court that people with a licence to consume marijuana, can do so in other ways, other than smoking or vaping it, such ways include creating oils, and baking it into cookies and lozenges (Fine 2015). This ruling was passed for a concern of young children smoking medical marijuana that it could cause deleterious effects, however consuming it in different ways may not have those effects. Ambrose does have very solid points, however as long as the marijuana in those forms are controlled and kept in safe areas, there should not be use among young children, unless they need it and the parents are there to help them. Although there has not been much evidence of the deleterious effects of marijuana or the benefits of it, there are still benefits to it and that has been written about, much more than negative cases. In another case in Victoria, British Colombia, in 2009, which involved a man named Owen Smith, who had baked over 200 marijuana cookies for the Victoria Cannabis Buyers Club, and kept marijuana massage oils and lip balm in his possession. Due to this he was charged with possession with the intent of trafficking and unlawful possession of marijuana (Do 2015). The Club delivers marijuana products to members, however they do not have a license to produce these products.
