Gaston is the slender, extremely muscular, strong, and handsome man in the town. Woman swoon over him while man hails him.as local hero. However, Gaston is the true definition of an antagonist. An antagonist does not have wacky appearance nor does a terrifying voice. In reality, an antagonist will always his or her mask on. When the mask falls down, behold the true face of evil. Gaston is the perfect example of a manipulative sociopath. He manipulates people to be his tool and disregard them once they served their purpose. He is ‘in love ‘with himself. For instance, in his introduction song, he sang that he is beautiful. “Here in town, there's only she, who is beautiful as me” (Gaston, page 6). He is indicating that he is special. In addition, when Lefau approached Gaston to inform him about Belle, Gaston was talking his reflection in the mirror. “You are the wildest most gorgeous thing I have ever seen. Nobody deserves you.” (Gaston, page 12). Although it might resemble a motivation saying to oneself on the surface level, it is blunt that Gaston is merely admiring himself. He is certain that he is special and no other deserves him. He belongs to hegemonic masculinity. As elaborated in the previous chapter, hegemonic masculinity refers to the traits of an ‘ideal or dominant masculinity’ of a particular period of time and place, and these traits will vary from time to time or place to place. In this film, Gaston is portrayed as a war hero (often called as Captain by the villagers) which makes him well-loved by the town. “There's no man in town as admired as you, you’re everyone's favorite guy, everyone’s awed and inspired by you.” (LeFou, page 24). This also makes him terrifyingly dangerous as he has the entire town on his side. Hence, he is able to exploit people easily. It is very transparent when Gaston lead the mob to kill Beast.
