Have you ever wondered what Earth was like without space exploration? In the story Leaving Main Street the author states, “The United States has more important things to spend money on.” On the other hand some people believe that successful space programs adds to our economy,national prestige,create jobs,and improves national security. We shouldn't spend valuable resources on space exploration, because we could end hunger and poverty. To begin In the story Leaving Main Street they argue if they should stop exploring space or if they should continue exploring space.     The short story, “ Where are you going, Where have you been?” by Joyce Carol Oates, an award-winning author, is known for unmasking the evil within everything and presenting it to the world through a fictional story. In what is thought to be her most terrifying yet highly acclaimed short story, Oates references many fairy tales that help carve the short story into a realistic allegory. She models the short story after the real-life murder of a teenage girl by the American serial killer Charles Schmid also known as the “Pied Piper of Tuscon .” Knowing this information allows a greater sense of reality opposed to fiction because the events throughout the story are fairly similar to the tragic horror that took place on May 31, 1964. The story deals with the temptations and the coming of age of a teenage girl while challenging the perception of America during the 60’s. Oates references several fairy tales throughout the story to help guide the reader and give a sense of an allusion. There were three fairy tales that stood out the most in the story: Cinderella, the Beauty and the Beast, and Little Red Riding Hood.

    To me, this emphasizes the fact that we continually embark on useless space voyages instead of considering the problems at hand. I can support this because the cost of space voyages is at the minimum of $500 to the maximum of $700 million. Found in Source B, on page 201, paragraph 3, lines 14-15 “It costs $500 to $700 million every time the shuttle flies.” This is a large sum of money, that has the capability to help many, yet we do not do this. If you can possibly visualize this, many people can find new homes, get well fed, and give their children a future to look up to, instead of wasting the money on a government project. In fact, the National Census Bureau of Statistics claimed over 46.5 people fell in poverty since 2014. Also stated, it would roughly take $175.3 billion to completely eliminate poverty. This is a tremendous amount of money, although we could have easily reduced this amount of money by limiting space exploration. Found on page 202, paragraph 3, lines 24-28 it is stated “The space station costs upward of $100 billion, yet its critics call it a “station to nowhere.” It has no clearly defined scientific purpose. Once, President George H.W. Bush’s science adviser was asked about the benefits of doing experiments in weightlessness and microgravity.
