When the novel first begins all seems well with just Ralph and piggy explaining the island. However, things take a quick turn for the worst as everyone first meets together. Ralph thinks it would make sense to elect a leader and there are no real objections to this.This example proves that Ralph feels the need for an orderly way of doing things. Leadership is a trait that many people have naturally and others try to obtain. Many people consider themselves a good leader when they fail to carry out the characteristics leadership require. In the book, “Lord of the Flies”, Ralph is a better leader than Jack because of the traits he possesses. That is why certain skills are necessary to be considered a successful leader.
According to Peter Drucker, he claims, “Effective leadership is not about making speeches or being liked; leadership is defined by results not attributes.” Leadership is a commitment that is meant to be kept and done accurately. Leading a group or a society can lead to dreadful obstacles, but it’s your responsibility to have a solution to end. Ralph and Jack as a leader cause a majority of downhill for the boys. Affecting themselves and their surroundings to abruptly fall into pieces. Which lead to a mass destruction of the island, Lord of the Flies. Ralph being himself not know which step to take closer to civilization fell, tripping over himself by one action “lugged off his shorts and pants and stood there naked” (Golding 10). This shows immaturity because his clothes symbolized all the laws and rules he followed and breaking away from them; Now Ralph is completely free and uncontrolled. This was a bad move on Ralph’s part because that shows the other boys they can break away and do their own thing. Very much the same as when Jack tore away from the rest of the group when he wanted a dictatorship instead of a democracy. The immaturity was spreading on the island like a disease because of the unlawfully savage of a leader, Ralph. In perspective Piggy should have been leader because he was the only one to still believe in the world they once lived in because he kept his clothes
There is an unknown perfect science to being a leader. Some say that this is something you can attain over time with training or guidance, and others say it's a talent you must be born with. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, one of the main characters Ralph, is elected the leader. The reason he is elected the leader isn't boldly laid out for the reader, but what is noticed, is that Ralph carries the true essence of a leader. Ralph can be seen as a great leader by the way he has everyone's best interest in mind, by the way he sets certain rules to maintain a civil society, and how he calls assemblies to address the issues that he has become most concerned with.
Society is based off of hierarchy which is the basis for the change people have in society. Sometimes it’s good and other times…. Well it’s not so good. In most respects, leadership defines the outcome of a certain society. A good leader with good intentions, leading society in good directions is bound to be beneficial and maintain an ethos that will carry with them for the rest of their lives. But then there are others that are too ignorant and become less and less what they had hoped to be. Lord of the flies by William Golding is a great example of this. Golding argues that where there is a gain in power with bad leadership, that there is a loss of identity. In Lord of the Flies, A few boys arrive on a plane after it had crashed because of a war that was taken place at the time of the plane crashing. The basic synopsis is that they are trying to be rescued. The boys recollect after being separated. There are no adults on the island either. During the period they were on the island, Lots of the boys had changed. Particularly Jack… He is a choir boy who wanted to be leader. His drastic change from choir boy to savage sets the stage for loss of identity. Rogers’s morals to his change in identity are drastic when he throws rocks at the littleuns. Finally we have Percival who’s Innocence and lack of understanding in the cruel world is destroying him mentally.
Worrying about how to handle this meeting, Ralph “[loses] himself in a maze of thoughts that [are] rendered vague by his lack of words to express them,” even though his mind is not a maze, this analogy works effectively, because Ralph usually loses his train of thought which is from of the stress he is under, his poor amount of nutrition and sleep; the weight of leadership has its toll on Ralph as the story progresses. He is dutiful and dedicated, but his attempts to instill order and calm among the boys are decreasingly successful and contrast with Ralph growing knowledge of leadership which is evident when Golding says, “the assembly shredded away and [become] a discursive and random scatter”; Golding suggests that their civilized society is slipping away and it is becoming primitive. Golding develops Ralph's particular concerns and insecurities in this chapter; by showing him brooding over his perceived failures, Golding highlights Ralph’s responsible, adult nature. Although Ralph exemplifies a more than sufficient intellect, he begins to realize that he lacks Piggy's knowledge when he says, “I can’t think [...] not like Piggy”.
Now I've said it. You voted me for chief. Now you do what I say.' They quieted, slowly, and at last were seated again. Ralph dropped down and spoke in his ordinary voice." All Ralph has to do is remind the boys that they decided to obey a certain set of rules, and they start calm down. It's scary to think about, but that's pretty much the only thing keeping our government in place, too, only a vast majority people think we should have one. What Ralph was talking about in that quote was how upset he is with everybody because they have stopped helping in making the island more comfortable and compatible for everybody. People are just hanging our and relaxing instead of helping by building the huts or keeping the smoke going. Thats the main reason Ralph called an assembly, it only helped for a few before things went back to the
Ralph shows that he has a better understanding of the boys than Jack. He knows that the boys need some sort of order on the island in order for them to survive. He starts a simple form of government and sets a few rules for them. Even though they don’t last very long, the fact that he tried to help the group is what makes him a better leader. Ralph’s wisdom and ability to look toward the future also has an advantage over Jack. He has a sense to keep his focus on getting off the island. When the fire goes out, Ralph gets upset because the chance to be rescued was gone as well. Ralph enforces his role of leadership as he gives the boys a sense of stability of an authority figure. He keeps the boys in pretty good order at the meeting by making a rule that they can only speak if they have the conch. Ralph knows that the littleuns are afraid and they need shelter to feel more secure. They work together for a while, but as the time goes on the smaller boys want to go play. They slowly lose all their help until Simon and Ralph are the only ones left to work on them. Ralph knows that this is a necessity and keeps bringing it up at the meetings. Jack, on the other hand, is doing nothing but causing chaos.
Over millions of years, man has transformed from a savage, simple creature to a highly developed, complex, and civil being. In Lord of the Flies, the author William Golding shows how under certain circumstances, man can become savage. During nuclear war, a group of British schoolboys crash land on an uninhabited island to escape. Ralph the elected leader, along with Piggy and Simon, tries to maintain civilization, while Jack and his group of choir boys turned hunters slowly become savages obsessed with killing. Through characters’ action and dialogue, Golding illustrates the transformation of civil schoolboys into bloodthirsty savages.
In the beginning of the story the airplane that is going to take the boys to a safe place gets shot down and landed in an island. Ralph represents democracy, when he and Piggy find the conch, Piggy suggested “We can use this to call the others. We have a meeting. They’ll come if they hear us” (16). Ralph is being democratic because he is giving them a choice if they want to go or not. He is also fair because he is going to have a meeting to decide what they are going to do. When they get together they decide that they need to have a chief. Roger says “Let’s have a vote” “Him with the conch” “Ralph, Ralph, Ralph” (22). They started to notice that Ralph would be a good leader. They see in him what a chief needs to have, and the conch in his hands means power and authority. They all start talking at the same time and discussing about who has to be chief, the choir boys think that Jack should be the chief but the rest want Ralph to be the chief. “I got the conch” said piggy indignantly “you let me speak” (42). Piggy gets the conch because represents power so the rest of the boys had to let him talk and show respect, Piggy was really intelligent so that helped Ralph be a better leader because he would listen to Piggy and choose what was right.
When Ralph and Jack placed their own personal needs of being in control of the other boys, order on the island broke down. Ralph stated that he was chief and as long as he was voted chief, the boys would do as they were told to, as stated in the chapter, The Beast from the Water, ‘You voted me for chief. Now you do as I say’ (81). This quotation incorporates the fact that Ralph has grown aware of the fact that he has the power to make decisions that affect the rest of the boys deeply and that he has the top power on the island at that point. Becoming chief was not necessarily a personal need for Ralph at first, but as events occur, he became aware of the fact that he has ultimate authority and will do make sure the boys complete their tasks in order sustain order, even if it meant disciplining them.
