Two of the principles that keep a community strongly moving forward are commitment to encouraging leadership and devotion to selfless community service. I try to encapsulate both of these integral intangibles every day, something I know Mr. Lottinville successfully did throughout his entire life. A leader can be someone who tells people what to do, but an even better leader is someone who shows others what to do. Leadership is important to me because a group embodies the mission and attitude of the leader. To accomplish a given task individually is not the goal of the leader; instead, the real goal is to empower those in the group to form their own solution. Mr. Lottinville embodied all of these mantras fully and continually. In our world today, these solutions can be as small as a detail for an event or as large as a solution to some of the world’s social injustices. My leadership experiences have included leading clubs, community groups, and by individual example, all of which have equipped me with lifelong skills. While some of my leadership experiences might not seem that grand in the whole scheme of things, I hope that under my leadership, something or someone has changed for the better, no matter how small.

As students we are “encouraged” to serve within our various clubs by having a certain number of service hours required. However, meeting an obligatory quota robs us of the real purpose of serving: developing a servant’s heart devoted to changing someone’s life for the better. In my life, I have strived to live out the quote “To whom much is given, much is required,” whether it be locally, through events and organizations such as Soonerthon, CAC Spark, and The Big Event or even nationally through programs like Operation Christmas Child and World Vision.
