According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 9 people were killed and over 1,000 were injured from texting and driving accidents every day in 2015, (“Texting While Driving”). This is way too many injuries and deaths for something that is easily preventable. Texting and driving is a serious problem in the world today and needs to be stopped. There should be more laws against texting because the current laws are not working, the laws are too different and confusing in each state, and it is extremely dangerous. Every state has different laws related to using a phone while driving and if someone is wondering what the laws are, it can be confusing. For example, there are a lot of states that ban cellphones for young drivers but there are also a lot of states that do not ban cell phones for young drivers, (“Distracted Driving”). In the southeastern United States, Florida, South Carolina, and Mississippi do not have cellphone restrictions for young drivers but Alabama, Georgia, and Louisiana have restrictions. This can be very confusing for someone who lives in this part of the country and would cause many people to not know the laws of states they are driving in. Another example of how there should be better laws are the states, Arizona, Montana, and Missouri. According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, these are the only states that have still not banned texting and driving (Smith). Because there are no laws against texting and driving, it would still be legal in these states. There are many lives in these states that could have been saved if they had laws against texting and driving. Four times as likely is a lot when it comes to getting in an accident. Anyone who says that that is not that much is wrong because that would be four times as many injuries that occur and many more lives that are taken. Not only does texting and driving cause more accidents, it causes more deaths as well. “According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2015, every day about 9 people were killed and more than 1,000 were injured in accidents in which distracted driving was a factor,” (“Texting While Driving”). Nine people being killed in one day is a lot. Every single one of these deaths were extremely avoidable. The only thing that was needed to avoid this is someone putting their phone down. It seems like all the time there is a story about a deadly crash as a result of texting and driving. For example, there was a crash in San Antonio, Texas last year between a pickup truck and a church bus that killed 13 people. The driver was texting in this crash (Knuckle). This crash like so many others, took so many lives and it was easily avoidable. If the driver had waited to text when he was not driving, those 13 people wouldn’t have died.
