My recently divorced History professor seemed to be in an extremely foul mood one dreary Monday morning. Every move and comment the class made seemed to irritate him more and more. Everyone in the room stopped moving and talking in concern for him, everyone except Josh, who is our class clown. He made the decision to make a comment to our teacher that any other day would have broken the ice and class would have resumed. For some reason, on this particular day it was the straw that broke the camel’s back. My professor looked up from the floor and in a matter of seconds had removed a gun provided to him by the school for protection, from under his jacket, and then shot Josh before anyone could do anything to stop him. Although, this is a story of fiction and never really happened, it could become a headline on the six o’clock news if David McGrath gets his way. He is the author of an article that supports teachers being given loaded weapons for protection in the classroom. To me providing teachers with weapons is a drastic move because the epidemic of school shootings is not as big as McGrath makes it out to be and there are many more sensible solutions that have yet to be explored.

He was reaching for his gun; he wasn’t reaching for his gun. His hands were up; his hands weren’t up. A confrontation between a police officer and a civilian can quickly escalate to anger. When the dust has settled and the endocrine system takes a break, it may be problematic to ascertain who did what to whom. Police officers in America should wear body cameras because they help provide transparency and accountability of officers, provide appreciated evidence in attaining witness/victim statements, and may even lead to exoneration of the falsely accused.
People argue that protective gear is enough to prevent most injuries. I disagree because many children get injured while wearing protective gear properly. Many injuries are caused by being overworked, and protective gear can’t prevent that.
In the article “Peaceful Woman Explains Why She Carries a Gun” Linda M. Hasselstrom, explains a series of events that prompt her to an important decision. It was a decision that changed her life. Hasselstrom is a respected writer who has written several books on based on personal, life experiences. In this particular article she gives examples of events that have occurred to her that forced her take a decision of carrying a gun. She explains that throughout her 10 recent years there were varies occasions where she saw herself in a dangerous situation. During those 10 years she constantly experienced situations where she saw she needed protection, and a simple self defense class wasn’t going to help. She became aware of her surroundings and eventually had experience on what to do in those types of dangerous situations. Although carrying a gun for her was something she needed when it came to protection, she also had to learn that it was a huge responsibility.
Policing relies on the public trust, police legitimacy and accountability, which can be destroyed by unjustifiable police shootings (Squires and Kennninson, 2010). Within this country, there is a recognition that the police do not always adhere to the rule of law (Newburn and Reiner, 2012: 809), which has led to consistent public outrage at the lack of effectiveness and legitimacy the police has maintained. Therefore the deliberate decision to enforce police to attend to the streets unarmed was employed to reassure the public that the police were not to be feared (Waddington and Wright, 2010). Ultimately, concerns derive from the belief that the police are completely ineffective when dealing with gun crimes (Farrell, 1992: 20). However, whilst arming police with guns can act as a protector when on duty it can also cause an increase in police misconduct. This issue will be discussed throughout this essay.
Why does the government make it harder for average citizens to protect themselves? Police cannot always protect everyone in the community. There are only about 500,000 police officers throughout the country, which means there is around 125,000 police officers on duty at any given time. Other than a bodyguard or a law enforcement officer at everyone’s side twenty-four hours a day, the most effective deterrent to a criminal attack is the criminal’s fear that the potential victim is armed and prepared to defend themselves.

Lieutenant Mori of the Washington County Police believes that stricter gun control would result in many homes losing an important means of defense. Twenty nine percent of homes in the United States have a firearm (Kangas). Without a firearm in high-risk areas, a family would be at criminals’ mercy. Forty six percent of adults purchase firearms, mainly handguns, for protection against crime (Guns in America). Three quarters of the handguns citizens purchase are for self-protection (Guns in America). Sixty seven percent of gun owning females and forty one percent of gun owning males purchased firearms for protection. “An estimated annual average of 62,000 violent crimes victims…used a firearm in an effort to defend themselves” (Guns and Crimes). Placing firearms into the hands of trained citizens could increase the amount of crime. Seventy one percent of violent crime victims take some action to protect themselves (Violent Crime). Only about two percent, however, use a firearm for defense, and this is almost always wards off the attacker (Violent Crime).
