While discussing the portrayal of Latinos and Hispanic in entertainment and the news media, Tyson Davis, a multimedia film and production professor at Georgia Southern University, discussed some personal experiences that he has encountered throughout his life and things he has seen, mainly in film and television about the portrayal of Latinos. Davis feels that there are many stories out there that the media can report on, rather than only focusing on immigration. Although Davis feels the portrayal and the coverage on Latinos in the news media and entertainment is getting better. “I don’t feel like there is near enough Hispanic representation in either television or films,” Davis said. Like Camille Broadway, a journalism professor at Georgia Southern, Davis feels that a lot of times when there is reporting on the Latino and Hispanic community it is often tied to the idea of illegal immigration in both the news and entertainment media. However, he couldn’t think of other examples stories about Latinos that didn’t deal with immigration policy. “There has got to be plenty more subject matter than immigration issues, as it relates to anyone who is Latino,” Davis said. “When you are watching the news, you feel like whenever they want to make a political point, they just bring in a Latino person and immigration and not anything else.” Davis believes that the main reason why immigration is focused on by the news media is because it is conflict. Conflict allows news organizations to gain readers and viewers, which results in an increase in profits.
