Langston Hughes poems reflect the cultural expectation and limitation of being an African American in the mid 1900’s. Poems like “Harlem” and “dreams” reflect how the African American community too had dreams. But due their societal position, they were faced with a dilemma. The dilemma of going against the strong white opposing force or succumb and leave their dreams to “dry up like a raisin in the sun”.
If taken for face value the readers will see Hughes work as universal poems placing the importance on having some type of aspiration in life. But for the reader to completely understand the true meaning of Langston Hughes poetry; the reader must know the time period in which Hughes lived and wrote in. Hughes wrote in a time where African Americans and other colored minority groups were considered as 2nd class citizens. Day to day life for these groups was filled with oppression and racism. Considering that aspect will allow the reader to have a full view of the true meaning beneath the stanzas. Not only did Hughes focus on the wellbeing of the African Americans but the overall health of mankind. His main concern was to not only uplift his community but to also uplift others to realize their true potential. Therefore he used his literary abilities to challenge racial boundaries, social conditions, and the overall mental constraints of society.
‘’Dreams” is a short poem that emphasizes the importance and necessity of having a dream or goals. Stating that without one “Life is a barren field; Frozen with snow”. The field represents life and the limitless opportunity individuals have to be fruitful. A life with no aspiration would be the equivalent a barren waste land because nothing can be produced. The last line is very powerful, because it alludes to the fact that people can only be held down so long before they revolt, or "explode". This theory can be related to Karl Marx belief of that the proletariat will develop resentment for the bourgeoisie and eventually revolt. (Callinicos)
Motifs that can be picked up in many pieces of Hughes work is the pursuit of the American dream, self-actualization, and aspiration. All three of these motifs can’t not exist without the other; the individual must realize there worth (self-actualization), find your purpose (aspiration), and following their talents or dreams (pursuit of the American dream). The American dream is where individuals have the equal opportunity to achieve regardless of ethnic background.
