Come Wednesday night a legendary career will come to an end as Kobe Bryant plays his last game in the NBA. Since Early December the end when Kobe Bryant announced his retirement, many have been flocking to see Kobe play for one last time while other stars try to meet with him. Usually when players retire they’ll go off and do something else and we’ve heard a number of things that Kobe could do once he hangs his sneakers up. We know Kobe has his own business that he’ll likely focus on and some want him to join the NBA on TNT crew, but Bryant has no interest in the broadcasting route. Magic Johnson’s group Guggenheim own the Sparks and we all know that Kobe has been seen at a few Sparks games in the past before. Magic Johnson is usually in his ear about a lot of things and I think talking Kobe into being a minority owner and business partner of the Los Angeles Sparks would be one. It would keep him in the game of basketball if Bryant decides to do so and there’s no better person than to do that with Magic himself. Would it be a perfect match? I wouldn’t go that far, but it would be a right fit for Kobe. Now if he wants to get away from the game and go a different route then investing into a Soccer team would also be up his ally. Kobe LOVES soccer and there’s a handful of athletes (LeBron being one of them) who own a share of soccer teams all over. I could see Kobe investing in Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, maybe Arsenal when it’s all set and done. Kobe Bryant will have loads of options as soon as he’s finished with playing Basketball this Wednesday. Lebron makes money from playing basketball but a substantial amount of his income comes from sponsorships and endorsement deals with outside brands. On the other hand, there are those who feel as if the effects of the lockout will be suppressed due to the strength of the league and its progression towards a new style of play. According to a recent article in the Los Angeles Times, proponents of the National Basketball Association rest their faith for the league on four basic fundamentals: popularity, being hip, demographics, and marketing savvy. Basketball has an advantage over all sports due to its ease of being played. All you need is a basketball and a hoop. As long as this holds true, proponents feel basketball will always remain popular. During the NBA's resurgence during the 1980's and '90's they, "tapped into the rhythm and mentality among younger sports fans that hadn't been touched yet.

Donald Sterling is the owner of the NBA team, the Los Angeles Clippers. He first bought the team in 1981. When he bought the team they were located in San Diego. Then he moved the team to Los Angeles in 198. He moved the team without the consent of the NBA, which caused him to get fined 25 million dollars. So, his troubles with the league have occurred before in the past, so he is no stranger to getting in trouble by the league.
As the game is winding down I can’t help but wonder what it must be like for some of the NBA’s top tier talent to stop and play in front of the masses. This is the closest some of these people will ever get to a real NBA game. There’s no promise of making it to a game over at the Barlcays or MSG. This is it for them. What makes this venue so appealing? It’s the in-your-face style. They get to serenade and shower the players with “oohs and aahs.” High-fiving their lantsman after a stellar dunk or killer crossover. While Spike Lee is sitting court side and shelling out thousands to see ‘Melo and company, I’m getting to see basketball how it was intended to be played.

People are motivated out of self-interest, and want to win. Rhoden really wants to believe that all black athletes are selfless and want the best for their community and race. But to expect this is really ludicrous. Kobe truly believes that the ends justifies the means. We started this Government and Politics class with reading a speech from Barack Obama during his campaign for presidency in 2008 that was a response to comments made by the minister of the church his family has attended. Barack says, “It’s that he spoke as if our society was static; as if no progress had been made.” President Obama was regarding the state of the treatment of Black people in the United States. He took a stance that is present in many white people throughout the U.S., and one that I believe definitely needs to be acknowledged in the discussion over the treatment of Black Americans. But on the other hand, I truly believe that there is a problem with the treatment of Black Americans in our country, and to deny that would be a denial of various statistics. The combination of the huge amount of police discrimination towards black people (which leads to the various brutality cases) along with massive socioeconomic gap between White Americans and Black Americans are both major issues plaguing the United States that need a solution for the betterment of the nation.
